Aston Rapide nearing approval; Maybach mulling future

Aston Martin is nearing a decision on its Rapide four-door project, according to AutoWeek. The car, if approved, is expected to go on sale in 2008 for $350,000. (See our original report on the Aston Martin Rapide Concept). AutoWeek also says MercedesMaybach division is trying to decide how to deal with weak sales of the ultra-luxury brand. One possibility, according to the report, is to develop a more modestly-priced S-Class-based vehicle — below the 57 and 62 — to compete with the Bentley Continental. In January, we reported that the $100,000 to $200,000 segment was rapidly growing, despite weakening sales for ultra-expensive models above $200k.

A GT is probably the way to go for Maybach. Especially in the US where the CEO car is just a strech towncar rather then a real luxury vehicle.
