Audi revived its A2 nameplate at the Frankfurt Motor Show with a concept car that’s likely bound for production.

Although the model on hand in Frankfurt will be a concept, a road-going version of the show car is expected to replace Audi’s unique, aluminum-bodied A2 model went out of production in 2005, but with the world’s governments calling for lower emissions and higher mpgs, the German automaker is preparing to bring the car back.

The overall look of the A2 concept falls in line with Audi’s current design language, although the car’s headlights usher in a new LED technology known as matrix beam. The technology allows Audi to use LEDs for the A2’s daytime running lights, low beams and high beams. The A2’s taillights are just as advanced, using laser technology to aid in visibility during foggy conditions.

The red stripe that runs the length of the A2 is not only a design cue but also a “dynamic light†that contains motion sensors. The embedded sensors allow the driver to unlock the car via gesture control and, when the car in motion, the bar also acts as the car’s indicator signal.

A similar dynamic light is also used on the car’s interior, with most vehicle functions controlled by touch screens on the A2’s steering wheel and center console.

The A2 concept measures in at just 12.47 feet in total length – more than a foot and a half shorter than the five-door A3 sold on these shores – but Audi says the city car can comfortably seat four. A completely flat floorboard ensures the maximum interior space possible.

The A2 concept is powered by an electric drivetrain that, the company says, offers “agile performance and long range.â€
