I love it when they launch a "NEW MODEL", called Special Edition, when it's just, in this case, the same plain old A4 cabrio, except the new generation A4 is just about being released and Audi just wants to sell the "old" ones.

I think it is European tradition to make all cars look alike. Thus numbering schema instead of a name. Peugeot always had 20X, 30X 40X, 50X models, the smaller number was a smaller car. Same with BMW and Benz. BMW has 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 series and second and third numbers in the series indicates displacement, or at least it use to be. 320 meant 3 series of 2 liter displacement. Benz was numbering the same way. Actually all cars looked about the same within manufacturing series except for proportions.
Fiats just gave engine displacements as models until '64. The first one was 124, which was copying either French or German schema, except it did not mean anything, because it was followed by 125 and 131 as an evolution.

I meant exterior design. Besides the R8, all the rest of the cars suffer from an "if you've seen one, you've seen them all" appearance. I think Audi needs to work harder on providing a little more differentiation in its lineup. I know a brand's portfolio needs to have coherence and a family resemblance, but I think it's a little too prominent at Audi. The designs are not unattractive, but they lack a certain degree of excitement that I think could elevate the brand to the next level.

On the other hand, if you don't want to be a "me too" type of person, then Audi is the perfect alternative to Mercedes Benz and BMW. I definitely don't see as many Audi products on the road as I see Mercedes or BMW.

No matter how good or bad Audi's products may be, they lack excitement. This makes them an also ran German luxury automaker when they are compared to BMW or Mercedes Benz. If they can find a way to inject some excitement into their products, then they might be a little more competitive with the German big guns.
