2010 Audi A5 convertible [Illustrated]

Audi will soon end production of its A4 Cabriolet, leaving the TT convertible as the lone drop top in the German automaker’s lineup. The departure of the A4 Cabrio will leave a clear gap in Audi’s lineup, but that hole should be filled around spring time next year when Audi launches a convertible version of the A5/S5, which our artists have illustrated.

Unlike the trend in the luxury drop top segment, Audi will forgo a heavy retractable hard top in favor of a lighter and more conventional soft top, according to Edmunds.

Powertrains for the for the A5 and S5 convertibles should mirror that of their sedan counterparts. That means the A5 drop top will feature a 265 horsepower 3.2L V6 mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic, while the S5 convertible will offer a 354 horsepower 4.2L V8 with the same transmission options.

Look for the newest Audi convertible to hit European dealerships in spring 2009, with an official unveiling just a couple of months earlier. The A5 convertible is expected to hit U.S. shores as a 2010 model.

What’s the “NEWS” in saying that Audi will end production of the A4 “Cabriolet” for them to only replace it with the A5 “Convertible” that is the same thing basically (at least according to the illustration)? It’s a nice A5 CABRIO-VERTIBLE rendering just the same.

The current A4 convertible is one of the only true 4 seater convertibles available on the market today. I think the A5/S5 will make a good update.

She may be in a ragtop but by the looks of that puss I’d say she’s on the rag as well.

johnnycanuck, it is a typical Germanic look. I cant swear that she is not on a rag, but it is her everyday look, regardless of menzies. And if your wife were married to Hans who’s idea of foreplay is goosestepping around bed, she would have that somber look as well :)

The A5 was already underpowered and overweight. Making it a convertible will probably add to the weight. The S5 is great. The S5 is on the edge of being too heavy causing the need for that gas sucking motor to make it perform anywhere near decent. A convertible version would make the S5 a bloated hunk of metal and not something worth the additional money. Too many other options at that price (a price above the S5 coupe).
