Almost unmasked: 2010 Audi A8

09/25/2009, 1:20 PM

By Drew Johnson

Earlier this week we brought you photos of Audi’s next-gen A8 covered in psychedelic camouflage. We’ve caught up with it again, but this time, all of the mind-numbing camo has been removed and only a few pieces of black tape remain.

The 2010 A8 will utilize Audi’s new, super-flexible “MLP” platform. This is the same chassis used for the A4, A5 and the upcoming A7. The A8 should see extended use of aluminum and magnesium in an effort to keep the large sedan’s weight down. While our photos show a “regular” wheelbase A8, you can expect Audi to continue making a longer “A8L” model as well.

The 4.2L FSI V8 motor will continue on under the hood of the A8 with a few revisions and modest power bump. Whether Audi might use the supercharged V6 currently found in the A6 and S5 remains to be seen.

The A8 will also feature the newest version of Quattro which features torque vectoring. This distributes drive individually between each axle and between the rear wheels for improved traction and stability.

Production is slated to start in the 3rd quarter of 2010 at the Neckarsulm factory in Germany.

I concur, current A8 is better looking. I don’t see a progress here.

can’t say this is a segment i’m really concerned about…i just think of them as bigger versions of lower tier cars with more gizmos and better leather…

As always, simple, classy, Nice,. Ive always favored the A8 to the 7 and the S. the 7 is always so bland and the S is over done, this is nice middle ground

not bad looking but it looks like ever Audi that out there just a bit bigger. kinda getting boring with that very generic shape that most cars use and all Audis but the R8 use it a simples elegance i guess but i’m bored. sure it will be a nice a car to drive and have and interior top notch.

in the 7 series you don’t get attention, in the s series you look like a cocaine dealer.
Buy the A8, it actually will get you the attention you want!

Does anyone knows anything about this torque-vectoring quattro system?

Does it work similarly to the Mitsubishi Evo? Will it be present in smaller Audis as well?

^ it uses two drive trains going opposite directions to eliminate torque steer.

What the hell Audi… I was banking on you revolutionizing the A8 design and blowing the S and 7 out of the water. Hell, get some bangle butt or something, i dont care. Just change it up a bit. I’d still take one over the benz and bimmer, I guess.
