Audi announces diesel A3 TDI for U.S. market

01/11/2009, 4:33 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Audi says it’s bringing another diesel-powered 50-state model to the United States later this year – this time it’s a 2.0-liter TDI-equipped A3 hatchback. Audi announced the new model earlier today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and the automaker says that U.S. sales will begin early in 2010.

The A3 TDI is powered by a 2.0-liter clean diesel – the same motor under the hood of the VW Jetta TDI – hooked up to Audi’s S tronic dual-clutch transmission. It’ll only be available with front-wheel-drive. The 2.0 TDI puts out 140-horsepower and 236 lb-ft. of torque.

Audi says the A3 TDI’s 2.0-liter doesn’t require any after-treatment system and that it’ll be capable of over 40 mpg on the highway.

The A3 TDI will be well equipped – Sirius satellite radio, leather seats and 17-inch alloy wheels will be standard. Expect pricing to be a bit higher than a similarly-equipped A3 2.0T gas-engine model.

It’s good that oil burners are coming to our shores, but 2.0 diesel from 1-Series BMW produces 177 hp and 258 lb ft in old application with combined economy of 58.9mpg (imperial) manual and 52.3 mpg for automatic. But in new application (in 123d), same displacement as old 120d (1995cc) it makes 204hp and 295lb ft of torque with 54.3mpg (50.4 mpg for auto). It makes over 100hp per liter of displacement!
So VW… er… Audi is trying to find fools to unload it’s ancient technology! 140hp from 2-liter engine is PATHETIC!!!

In Europe probably. I’m glad to see that this engine is coming over though, great fuel economy and you know people are gonna tune it. wonder if they’re gonna offer it with quattro though.

Stinky…apparently you aren’t familiar with the concept of torque. 236lb ft. of torque is a great number from a 2.0L four cylinder (diesel), and plenty for a car the A3’s size. And Bimmer you should include the weights of those motors as well. Power means nothing if it costs you hundreds of pounds in weight to make.

That torque figure looks nice, but I still wonder how it has less torque than the EA 888 which is a 2.0T four-banger than runs on gas and makes 258ft-lbs over a decent band. If the gas engine provides more torque than the diesel then why get the diesel? Fuel-consumption might be there, but diesel is expensive here.

I said this before….

Europeans can keep their diesel’s on their side of the pond. Gas here is cheap and plentiful, and by the next time when it isn’t, We’ll have Ford – GM – Honda – Toyota to thank for various electric cars. Oil burners will never carry the smotthness of a modern direct-injection gas burner or an electric car. What do you need all that torque for? You towing something in the overpriced version of the GTI? My 2.0T gets anywhere from 29-34 anyway and doesn’t sound like a school bus on cold mornings. With the price of diesel being more than 30% more expensive, the 20% fuel mprovement in gas milage doesn’t sound so great.

There are Ox carts that are less embarrassing to drive. 30,000$ = 21,051 Euros. The list price for the same car with same engine in Germany is: 26,700 Euros = 38,050$. And you are complaining ???

I think they don’t bring the 170hp version because the U.S. rules about diesel are stricter than in europe. Even in Europe, EURO 5 and EURO 6 are severely increasing development costs of diesels to meet these targets (btw VW is lacking in this field, Fiat and PSA are closer to meet EURO 5 and EURO 6 for diesel than VW). They need to add a plaethora of exhaust treatment devices like particule filters, 3 oxicat etc… But the point is that diesels are selling well in Europe, so they can pay back their R&D.
Why VW would trouble itself with developping the 170hp for the US regulations, so that only a few people would buy the more powerful engine (which would obviously cost way more).

These diesels are all in Europe and are truly fantastic. I’ve spent a lot of time driving them. That said, the engines do suffer from our lower quality diesel here in the states.

What I don’t get is why these companies bringing the diesel to the US make them only available fully equipped. Trying to enter the market it doesn’t make sense. I wish you could buy cars spec’ed to the European standard instead. Give me the 2.0 Liter, Quattro, a manual transmission and Xenons and keep the rest. The people buying a diesel aren’t going to want a fully loaded car.

I would NEVER pay over $30,000 for a compact car with 140 hp. That’s how much a base model TDI A3 would cost with destination. This car in my opinion is the biggest rip-off in the world! There are too many options that will get almost the same fuel mileage, and is just as fun to drive for tens of thousands of dollars less. Good luck with Audi triyng to sell this model to McDonalds-loving American fat-asses! It will only motivate people to get the Jetta TDI instead. Less money + more room + same engine = no brainer.

What most people in the U.S. don’t realize is that most of these models have been in production for years.
It is due to our own Cluster-Phuck government (EPA and DOT) as well as the BIg 3 lobbyists that keep these kinds of cars that we seek – out of our reach. Yes, the A3 TDI is a bit pricey with it’s base price. But I’d gladly pay more for an Audi before I waste my money on a Volt or a piece-of-$hit Toyota Prius.
There’s my 3 cent’s….
