As Volkswagen continues its global push to surpass Toyota as the world’s largest manufacturer, it is faced with adding and expanding plants in the various regions it now serves.

Just yesterday Leftlane reported that Audi would add 2,100 workers to its plant in Hungary, today the automaker told Automotive News that it is realizes it needs additional production capacity in the U.S., only questioning when exactly it will add to its production capabilities in America.

“It is totally clear we need new production capacity in the United States — the question only is when,” said Audi Chief Executive Rupert Stadler. Though the statement may sound like a sure call for a near-term plant addition, it is worth noting that Stadler has made similar claims in months and years past with nothing to show for it.

Earlier this year, for example, Stadler claimed that Audi should know if it has the necessary sales volume to justify a U.S. plant by 2015 – meaning the decision could very well still be years away.
