A4 I think you’ll find all the 4.2 V8’s share a common Architecture, spanning from the block and beyond. No one could really argue that an S4 V8 is completely removed from that of the RS4.
the Q7 V12 TDI is not Related to the R10’s V12 TDI. The R10 V12 is 5.5 litres, has a 90 degree bank angle and is entirely aluminium for starters. The Q7 V12 being 6.0 litres, with a 60 degree bank angle and made from cast-iron with vermicular graphite (GJV-450).

Sure they have similar features, but are no more similar than a mercedes v12 is to a lamboghini v12. So before we scrutinise each others inputs lets know first if we are correct

According to Audi they are building a maximum of 15 R8’s per day at the limited production factory.. so i think their attention to quality is going to definatly give these a better reputation than most would believe.

it shares a bit more than cylinder number and diesel power Eisen… most reports tout it as being derived from the R10’s TDI, and while it may not be similar by any means, it surely has more connections than a mere cylinder count. Much like the 4.2 FSI V8 in the RS4/R8 is mildly derived from the 4.2 in the S4/A6/A8/Q7, but is so vastly different its basically an entirely new engine.

I wish educated people would stop saying the Q7’s V12 TDI is the same engine as in the R10. It shares the number of cylinders, the TDI concept, but is of a completely different architecture. Im the biggest Audi fan around but I would be hard pressed to see how they’re going to fit such a big heavy engine into the R8, considering how compact the 4.2 V8 it currently runs is in comparison. Hopefully they proove me wrong.

that would be really cool.. I would remove all the emissions equipment, so when I stomp on the gas, it spews black smoke all over other cars, then when it clears, I’m a mile ahead of them ahaha

Theres also the A8 with the W12.. its not the A12

and lets hope audi doesnt make a hybrid one of these, thank god its pretty much guaranteed they wont copy some japcrap toyota.

i agree with Stuart that they should uprate the power and shove it in the murcielago as well. it would push them even farther ahead of ferrari in terms of technology, and it would be unique and badass as well.

[Plus the Chevrolet is nowhere near the quality of a Audi A3 let alone any othertop end Audi.

Ha! I’ll take the reliability of my Chevrolet (Z06) anyday over that of any Audi. My ‘02 Z06 has a flawless record of reliability, while I know several people with Audis that have major electrical issues and quality control problems. Audi’s have great interiors and great technology, but reliable they are not. If I bought one of the diesel RS8’s, I can assure you I would never keep it past its warranty period, and I wouldn’t buy it for its reliability or quality, I would buy it for its diesel performance, uniqueness, and technology, fully expecting it will be in the shop more than the average car.

I’ve been pretty hard on Audi as of late, but I think this is a good idea.

By using a diesel in the R8, Audi isn’t necessarily competing directly with Lamborghini (read: themselves), but offering something similar but completely different. I mean, the numbers seem to suggest that the R8 would be completely better than the Gallardo, except that the engines will behave quite differently. So there will be a noticeable difference between the two cars (apart from trim and badging). Also, with Audis current commitment to and dominance with diesel race cars, a diesel sports car just makes good sense.

The only thing I don’t like is the name. As a rule, the nomenclature for German cars makes a lot of sense, except when they start messing around with it. The R8 has an 8 cylinder engine, if they put a 12 cylinder in it, then they better call it the R12.

Audi is pretty much trying (and should succeed) in revolutionizing the sports car industry. The R10 prototype race car is incredibly powerful and incredibly quiet with it’s V12 TDI engine. After it kept destroying the competition, the ALMS regulated that it carry extra weight and other cars in its class get more fuel. It still ran them down.

If they put that V12 into the R8, it will be worthy of being called a supercar, and will pretty much destroy that 3-Series tying 0-60.

It will be faster then the Gallardo but cheaper and better made. Makes the gallardo worthless then especially when you consider the mileage as well. On top of that it will have a bigger engine.

They ahould increase the power to around 600 bhp mark and shove it into the LAmborghine murcielago. That would really make an impact on the diesel perception and take it even above hybrids.

Plus the Chevrolet is nowhere near the quality of a Audi A3 let alone any othertop end Audi.

I think audi is making a big step with this car, if they can shoehorn the 12tdi into that mid engine chassis id say they are going to have themselves one hell of a car.

I’d do the same, but I’d get those lights modded. I’d go with the original LED lights found on the concept car, and I’d remove the X-Mas lights around the front head lights.

Stuart. I disagree. In contemporary economics, self-cannabalism is seen as a good thing. Besides, I think the Gallardo and the R8 go after two different market segments. Your statement about the death of the Gallardo would be like saying all supercars are doomed once the Corvette Z06 comes out.

Why are all german companies on selfdestruct. Mercedes has 15 models and are planning more with S-class convertibles and Audi R8 models also in the pipe line. BMW and Audi also wanting to have their own model of each car Mercedes has. So where is the exclusivity in buying a car from these makes???

Probably find more exclusivity in buying a ford lol
