Audi expects V10 R8 to beat ZR1, GT-R Nurburgring lap times

07/28/2008, 1:05 PM

By Nick Aziz

Nissan and GM have managed to attract a lot of attention to their new GT-R and Corvette ZR1 sports cars thanks to some highly publicized lap times at Germany’s Nurburgring race track. With the launch of the V10 version of R8 around the corner, Audi hopes to trump both cars with a time faster than 7 minutes and 26 seconds.

Exact specs of the new range-topping R8 are unknown, but it should deliver around 535 horsepower and is expected to debut at the Paris Motor Show in October.

While Audi hasn’t yet made an official proclamation of R8 V10’s Nurburgring-crushing abilities, a source told Sweden’s Auto Motor & Sport the new model has already beat the ZR1.

A month ago, GM announced a ZR1 piloted by development engineer Jim Mero recorded a time of 7 minutes 26.4 seconds — three seconds faster than the Nissan GT-R time announced in May.

With Nissan aiming for a sub-7:25 lap time with its Spec-V GT-R, it will be interesting to see if the Audi will manage to come out on top.

We’ll see if the R8 can go 7 minutes 39 seconds withOUT bursting into flames.

I don’t know, this seems a little like wishful thinking on Audi’s part. The R8’s a helluva car, don’t get me wrong, I’m rootin’ for it, but I just don’t see it.

The ‘Ring’s got some nice long straights that would seem to favor high horsepower (ala ZR1), but if the GT-R can manage such a low time, then maybe there’s something to be said about AWD, as well.

Still, it just doesn’t seem that a 535 hp V10 will do it. Isn’t the Gallardo–which is more of a balls-out sports car than the R8–a better benchmark re how a V10 R8 would fare on the ‘Ring. There’s no talk of a Gallardo blowing away a ZR1 or GT-R….

I dont think that the V10 can beat the ZR1. The V10 does not have enough low end grunt to be useful in the twisties. On the straights it would take too long to catch up to a ZR1 since the ZRI would be able to come out of the corner faster with its torque.

The saving grace that it has over the GTR is weight and top end.

Beating a car on the Ring is one thing, pricing the car competitively is another. So what if R8 beats ZR1 by a small margin, but is exponentially more expensive?

To us that makes alot of sense but to the guys that have 100k+ to spend on a second car, it’s all about them bragging to their friends at Goldman Sachs that their car can go around atrack they probably never heard of before a couple of seconds faster. Bragging rights sell…

If it’s true, it’ll be short lived when the ZR-1 runs the ‘ring again with one of their C6-R team drivers. GM was definitely sandbagging with their first ZR-1 run. I’m sure Jim Mero is a fine driver, but he’s a development engineer, not a professional race car driver.

After seeing a few stock ZO6’s beating stock R8’s from a dig after the R8 got a whole length off the line, and the ZO6 still passing and beating it on you-tube… I can’t see a 550hp Audi R8 beating a lighter 638hp ZO6… even w more hp & AWD

But hey, Audi is welcome to try, and more competition is better than no competition… Now if it was the TDI V12, then I’d be favoring the Audi R8 on that one…

Sweet! Although it’s a shame they had to pull the turbos off this thing. It woud’ve been a beast with the plant straight from the RS6. I guess when people say that they want “blistering” lap times, they don’t actually mean 3rd degree burns.

Also, speaking of Nordschleife, did anyone see Sabine on this week’s Top Gear? Haha, what a woman.

The Gallardo is also quite outdated now, so the technology factor comes into play. I know everyone loves the ZR1 because it is a “real car” that doesn’t use tech to make it quick like the GT-R, but there is no getting around the fact that if you get beat by a GT-R while in a ZR1 then “real car” or not you came in second place. The same thing is going to happen with this R8, there will most likely be a lot of tech driving it which is why it will be faster than a Gallardo. I don’t think it will catch on fire because if I remember correctly the V10 models that got toasted at the ‘Ring were turbo or twin turbo models that Audi was sort of playing around with. It remains to be seen if Audi follows through on this promise but again it is not unbelievable that they can.

C&D’s lightning lap showed a Z06 faster than the 200k+ Porsche. They’ve been slower for some time.

As long as high schoolers don’t drive vehicles like this and kill themselves in a tree, I’m happy. Too many of them do it in vehicles like those stupid Neon SRT4s and such. But, the less of their breed the better.

Funny how so many people in how many people in here are such “experts” and make it sound like with absolute certainty, that they know what the R8 will or won’t do. We’ll just have to wait and see. Either way, the R8 is, and always will be a better car than the other two, just by the fact that it is one of the best engineered and best built cars on the planet.

ZO6ified, spoken like a true Corvette Fanboy.

LS7, how do you know? Have you seen an R8 V10 in action, let alone even see one? I highly doubt it, it has only been unveiled at international autoshows, no one outside of Audi has seen it in action. Just because the Lamborghinis didn’t do it, or the Ferraris, doesn’t mean this car can’t. Despite being on the Gallardo chassis, the R8 and Gallardo are completely different animals.

Sprockkets, that’s really interesting, because the only thing the ZR-1 was faster in over the GT2 was the 1/4 mile by 5 mph. These cars are not built for the 1/4 mile, that’s not what they’re designed for, so it’s irrelevent. The GT2 and Turbo are both faster than the Z06…so tell me how they’ve been slower for a while now? Even if they are, they’re more than fast enough, so who cares if the Vette or GT-R is faster.

razr1983, funny, you call the R8 a piece of crap. You do know that the R8 is one of the best built and best engineered cars on the planet, right? Did you know that the C6 generation Vettes have consistently ranked well below average for quality and reliablity every year they’ve been in production? EVERY YEAR. The 996 and 997 generation 911s are ranked well above average for quality and reliability. The Corvette is GARBAGE, deal with it. Unlike the GT-R, the 911s and Audis aren’t blowing out their transmissions last time I checked.
