Audi of America made the highest jump on the 2008 JD Power and Associates’ initial quality study, which was released on June 4. The German luxury automaker moved up to take the #10 spot, up from 26 in 2007 with 113 problems per 100 vehicles. The same survey revealed the Audi A6 tied for third place in the Midsize Premium Car segment.
The survey polls new vehicle owners on their experiences with the cars they own, getting their views in the first 90 days of ownership.
“One of our most successful quality drivers has been listening to our consumers – and applying what they teach us at the earliest stages of our vehicle development,” said Audi of America’s executive vice president Johan de Nysschen. “It is nice to have our passion for quality recognized, but our focus is on raising the bar even higher in the future.”
The automaker is set to launch a freshened up A3 hatchback with all-wheel drive and all-new A4 sedan and wagon this September, along with the TTS coupe and Roadster by the end of the year. In the first quarter of 2009, the company will launch its Audi Q7 3.0 TDI and introduce its Audi Q5 mid-size SUV.

Good news but initial quality is kind of pointless. The real challenge will be to improve the long term reliability of these cars -crossing fingers-

Gotta love that quote: “passion for quality.” How about their passion for overpricing?

Engine-wise yes their motors are overbuilt. It’s the electricals that tend to be quirky, there is just SO much gadgetry built in to these cars, it’s not surprising to find a bug or two. Plus, I think Audi puts something like 4 ball joints at each corner which can make for a really pricey suspension setup if something needs to be replaced.
I do remember the last A6 was ranked one of the highest, if not THEE highest in ownership costs according to multiple sources. The VW coil pack gremlin also used to plague the A4 model as well.
An AWD A3 is really tempting and could really pull me into the Audi foray. Just give it the option of a manual gearbox please.

So with 113 problems per 100 vehicles I’m statistically guaranteed to have a problem of some kind with a brand new Audi. That’s beautiful. Sign me up.

the best Audi was in Transporter 2, that car NEVER got scratched, dented, dinged or dirty- they need a car like that, AND it held it’s on in out running the cops…. yes i know it was a movie but eh

The only reliable reliability survey is made by German TUV, it’s based on service repair data of at least 10,000 units of each model.
JD Power is based on subjective owners’ experiences, what’s more, in the first 90 days of ownership. Totally pointless. What about after 25K miles, when the brake pads go south…. Or after another 10K when brake disc had to be changed. That’s the real life experience of a 60K miles test done in Europe with a Audi All Road Quattro. Or leak that was shortcutting GPS antena…..
“I bought an Audi and paid 50K bucks for it. It sucks and I made a mistake. Will I admit it. Of course, not.”
or
“I bought an Audi and I expected that that my car would break 10 times in a year. Now I’m happy as it only broke 5 times.”

KITKO: Exactly, long term is completely omitted from these surveys, making them useless to anyone who actually owns a car.

Right, IQS is a scorecard for dealer delivery quality more so than the automaker or customer.
RDI (dependability) is what customers should looks at. And we already know which automaker and which model will be listed as highest if past trends continue (hint: champagne glasses).
Unfortuneatley, you have the likes of Ford saying their quality is equal to Toyota when the ‘quality’ actually refers to initial quality.

What is it with VAG products (Audis & Volkswagens, not Canesten Combi and Tampax) on the wrong side of the Atlantic? I’ve just sold one ten-year-old Audi and still have a five-year-old one. The ten-year-old needed a new cat and a water pump in the last four years, the five-year-old has needed nothing out of the ordinary.
.
How can these brands be bywords for dependability here and for unreliability there?

I never questioned Audi quality, only that they are overpriced and do not drive as sharply as BMWs.
they are excellent cars, just not for me. Except that R8………wow!

I really wish Audi would start making more reliable cars. I mean, I know they can, but seriously. If they were more reliable then I’m sure they’d pickup a much larger customer base. Maybe that’s just me though.
