Volkswagen-owned Audi has caught the crossover fever. After the Q7, the Q5 and the Q3, the automaker is rumored to be hard at work on an entry-level model dubbed Q2.

The Q2 will reportedly be revealed as a thinly-veiled concept car at the Paris Motor Show next September. If approved for production, it will be aimed directly at segment heavyweights like the MINI Countryman, as well as the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.

England's Autocar reports that the Q2 concept will bow in Paris in three-door form in order to create an aura of sportiness around the crossover. When it hits showrooms in 2014 or 2015, both three- and five-door variants of it will be available.

Riding on Volkswagen's new modular MQB platform, the Q2 will be powered by the usual assortment of transversally-mounted, Volkswagen-sourced four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. Buyers will be able to pick whether they want power sent to two or four wheels, and a performance-oriented model that will take on the John Cooper Works variant of the Countryman is not out of the question.

Penned by Audi design chief Wolfgang Egger, the Q2 is said to borrow styling cues from the Quattro concept that bowed at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, as well as the Volkswagen CrossCoupé that debuted in Tokyo last fall.

At the time of writing it is not clear whether or not the Q2 will make its way to the United States.

The Q2 is just the beginning of Audi's crossover expansion. Last April, the German automaker trademarked the monikers Q4, Q6 and Q8. All of them are expected to spawn production variants before the end of the decade.
