Audi Q7 V12 TDI to arrive in late ‘08

08/07/2007, 9:10 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Audi previewed a 12-cylinder diesel version of its Q7 SUV at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit back in January and now comes word that the production version of that vehicle is set to arrive in the second half of 2008. North American sales are likely, but unknown. Given the dramatic increase in diesel interest in the North American market, it would be silly to write off the possibility of sales here.

The report comes from Autotelegraaf, a Dutch magazine, that the V12 TDI will likely post close to the 500 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque previewed in the show car. It has also been rumored that Audi will use the same motor for its unconfirmed-but-likely R8 TDI supercar, essentially a road-going race car.

Yes, Audi really outdid themselves with this engine. Diesel FTW!

If this engine is a derivative of the turbocharged unit found in VW Race Tourage then reliability won’t be it’s strong point…

Outrageous torque!

I love the editorializing: “… it would be silly to write off the possibility of sales here.” LOL!

500 hp & over 700 ft lbs of torque? If I ever buy another SUV, this would definitely be it. I had taken a liking to the Range Rover Sport TDV8, but this motor has way bigger cojones. I’ve driven diesels (In trucks) for quite a long time and they’ve consistently gotten more powerful, fuel efficient and emissions friendly over the years.

Volkswagon and reliability are an oxymoron. They’re as bad as Mazda when it comes to building POS cars.

Um guys..GM SALES is probly paid by GM or something to go all over the web and post comments praising and advertizing GM cars and trucks.

Anyway, if VW puts this engine in the Phaeton, it might make people take that car more seriously.

Actually Mazda’s reliability has improved but VW/Audis has slower gotten better. Interiors look great but with newer GTI/A3’s having radiators fail, electrics being frappy and even DSG systems not shifting correctly, they are slowly getting better. Audi had better decide to bring a quattro platform over for the A3 in 2.0T trim to scoop all the lost Subaru sales.
