Or it could be the companies are just protecting those names in the sort term while they dont ahve any real plans to use them. They just dont want anyone else to use those names. In the case of the BMW M1. That has been an iconic name in the past for BMW. Whether they plan to use the name or not they are smart to register it to protect against another manufacturer from using the name.

BMW have always used the “x” for AWD dating back to the 1988 E30 325iX (Maybe earlier but not sure!)… What would sDrive stand for anyway??

As far as the BMW sDrive names, since we know xDrive is applied to SUV/CUV models with AWD, perhaps BMW is planning to rename their AWD Xi sedan and wagon models to sDrive. But that could get pretty awkward.. BMW 535i sDrive35, anyone?

JoshyLofty, my thoughts exactly. Though it would be odd to see the revered M1 name grafted to a lowly 1-series, a supercar revival of the original M1 named M10 would be a logical progression.
