We reported back in March and April that Audi was preparing a V10-powered version of the R8, and it looks as though the first evidence of such an endeavor is on the road. However, while the V10 R8 will use the same 5.2L V10 found in the Audi RS6 Avant, the R8’s powerplant will ditch the wagon’s twin-turbo setup.
Audi is reportedly loaning a pre-production prototype of the new V10-powered car to a select few current R8 owners.
Not only will the new model sport two more cylinders, but it will also feature new front and rear bumpers and a revised exhaust system.
It remains unclear what Audi will call the new model, but Autocar reports that the RS8 nameplate is likely, leaving the RS version of the A8 in limbo. However, R10 still remains a possibility.
The 4.2L V8-powered R8 makes 420 horsepower, and it is expected that the new V10 engine will bump the R8’s rating to at least 500 horsepower. The V10-powered Audi R8 is expected to bow in September with an on sale date of early to mid 2009.

Weren’t the turbos cooking the car during testing? Maybe they never resolved that issue.

Yes, the twin turbo R8 burned to the frame because of overheating. I imagine there isn’t a lot they can do to make more room in a mid engined car’s engine bay except for lengthening the chassis, which is probably cost prohibitive.

This is a bit of dissapointment. I was expecting to see full-bannana V10. If this is true, V12 TDI will be the best choice.

I agree though that the V12 TDI will be the ****.

How can Audi be so stupid, when they know the Skyline GT-R is coming out? But then again, the RS6 Turbo V10 only made 520HP–20 more than what they are expecting without turbo.
It’s interesting–many journalists compared this car to the 911 Carrera. I some how doubt this car will keep pace with 911 Turbo.

1. I like how PR spins the V10 as being “the one in the RS6 without turbos”. Translation: Gallardo engine!
2. Stop dreaming about a V12 TDI R8! That engine is to heavy for this application! Search wikipedia for the weight facts.

Turbos were borrowed from V2 rocket. Didn’t work all that well in the car.

The V12 R8 exists and its complately working, read article on AUTOCAR about road test of this car. Yes its heavy but its also lower for better handling and massive 1000Nm pulls 200Kg overweight without any problems.

sounds amazing! If I was to buy this car, I would get the upcoming 500hp diesel. Although this V10 will be quicker than the diesel version, the diesel can still hit 60mph in 4 seconds flat and has a top speed of 190mph, and great fuel economy.

acctually V12 diesel has top speed of 200+ mph. the current V8 version is capable of 190mph.

Well, first of all, I don’t trust “prototype reviews”. I’ve seen a couple of so called reviews for the W12 Golf which said the car was awesome and could beat a lot of “supercars”, but when everyone’s favourite car a*****, Jeremy, tested it on Top Gear, the car was extremely unstable and near impossible to control in the turns. The Lamborghini Reventon reviews also come to mind: the cars were limited to 120 km/h for the purpose of the reviews. The Enzo cannot be reviewed by the press without the written accept of Ferrari. The owner even signs a contract stating he’s not going to leave anyone review it without Ferrari’s approval.
What I mean to say is that a “prototype review” is just that! I doubt Audi let the one V12 TDI showcar get pushed hard enough by the press to prove that the extra 200kg doesn’t make any difference. My take: it’s just PR, magazines do it all the time. The praise a newly released cars to please the manufacturer and later bash for not being reliable. looking to dull after one year, etc…
My point is, if the V12 TDI would have made both economical and performance sense, Audi would have built this version. Truth is, the V10 is a road-proven powerhouse that can put down roughly the same horsepower and weigh less at the same time. In my book, that is a winner!

I agree, but the problem is that everybody like the Twinturbo version of V10. If audi will remove the turbos then it wont be the same. I want to see RS8 with Twinturbo V10 and 580bhp. This would be the perfect combination. I really doubt that audi has problems with cooling. They used same cooling system as it is on the V12 concept and it works just fine. The real reason may be that audi doesnt want the RS8 to be faster and better than gallardo LP560. Keep in mind that LP560 will cost about 50% more than upcoming RS8 (or whatever it will be called). But as there are no official information yet, we can only guess.

Interesting… I would never have really figured this as such a thing would be treading a little too close to the Gallardo… either way, there’s never anything wrong with the notion of a Lambo for $40-50K off.
I’d still like to see the 600HP V12 TDI… if anyone actually read the entire Wikipedia entry (despite the question of why anyone would rely on Wikipedia as a source of solid info) would have also probably come across the weight of the R8 on there somewhere…. The R8 is a heavy car as it is, so any extra tonnage added to the vehicle by the V12 would be easily offset by the big jump in power.
Even with such weight… the R8 has been shown to stack up quite well against Porsche.

Stinky007, I bet you are from England. You see, for us Americans 440 lbs is a basic difference between Mr. & Mrs. David Beckam and couple of happy-go-lucky American kids. We don’t lunch on half a salad alone. If car can’t handle weight of ordinary driver and passenger who needs it?

lol, that’s a great point — however, there isn’t a single Audi made that couldn’t benefit from a serious diet; losing 440lbs would just be a START to the portly problems that the contemporary Audis have. I had a quattro back when Audi knew how to keep them at 3100lbs and it made a world of difference — ypu could get by with a liter less displacement and only four gears and still kick the crap out of American POS sedans and coupes. And, everyone automatically assumed you were a dentist! (which I’m not)

I’ve not seen any reviews where the V8’s performance was a concern, so the boost should just make a great car greater. And the noise… ever heard an M5 with a not-quite-legal exhaust? The R8 V8 and RS4 are already giving my balls a happy tingle every time I hear them, I can’t wait until this joins the party.

jonmiles your an idiot, the new S4 is going to be great again just like the B5 2000-2002 platform with the 2.7 biturbo. What i dont understand is why LLN just didnt say it has the V10 out of the S6 or S8 instead of reminding us about the lack of turbos.
