Viewers are treated to a lap of the famous 'ring unlike any other in an experience that is slightly eerie, if not inspiring. While it looks very similar to its V8 and V10-powered stablemates, it sounds absolutely nothing like them at full pace. Audi have already detailed their artificial e-noise proximity notification system to alert pedestrians in the vicinity of the car at low speeds, but at speed, the supercar makes virtually no noise.
All that viewers can hear are the tires screeching around corners and wind noise, as the R8 e-tron hurtles around the track faster than any EV before it. Incredibly, its 8 minutes and 9 second lap is just five seconds shy of the V8 R8, while putting some other petrol-powered sports cars to shame in the process. Also on display is the R8 e-tron's new 7.7-inch AMOLED digital rearview mirror along with the driving skills of Markus Winkelhock.
The Audi e-tron is powered by a 375-horsepower all-electric powertrain, which managed to average 95mph on its record lap. It should be noted that while the production version will be artificially to limited to a top speed 125mph, the record lap was set with the limiter off. The best time set by Winkelhock with the limiter on was a still respectable 8:26.096.
