Audi S4 to return to bi-turbos?

Audi will returned to a forced-induction V6 on its all-new S4 model rather than sticking with the current V8 setup, a new report finds. With the new S5 model filling in the GT spot in Audi’s lineup, the German automaker can return the S4 to its roots of a performance tuner car.

The new S4 — which has been reportedly been circling the Nurburgring — is expected to use Audi’s 3.0L V6 FSI and a bi-turbo setup similar to the one found on the B5 car, not a V8 configuration as earlier reported. However, there is the possibility that Audi could opt for a supercharger setup. Whatever type of induction Audi decides to use, output is expected to total at least 300 horsepower — matching that of the BMW 335.

It is also expected that the next-generation S4 will use Audi’s new Audi’s Sport Differential quattro system, which is said to virtually eliminate understeer.

It remains unclear when Audi will take the wraps off of its new S4, but our sources say it will bow at an auto show within the year and could be available in the U.S. as early as 2009.

  1. That is wicked. I was reading about their Sport Differential quattro and it sound unbelievably good. The bi-turbo V-6 sounds awesome. nobody does turbo’s better than audi .I would love to see this in 09

  2. I’d like to see Audi get a front-mid engine set up going, that plus high power and a rear-biased all wheel drive would give it an edge against Bimmer et al. They already got the styling down pat.

  4. Yes!!! This is what VW/Audi does best. Ricardo, why don’t you trust a turbo? If a motor is built for one, they make for a great mix of performance and economy.

  5. Sharif, when it comes to turbos Garett and Mitsubishi are the top dogs, Audi is not even close these days. Even BMW in it’s 335 is using Mitsubishi turbos for a reason as they are reliable and race proven technology.

  7. Turbos rule. And Audi knows turbos… typically KKK units. But not as good as Garrett and Mitsu, like blitzkrieg79 said, or even IHI. But still, I have high hopes for this car.

  9. I guess Audi has forgotten about the last turbocharged S4 warranty debacle. Every young punk with an S4 was chipping them to crank up the boost to ridiculous levels, then of course blowing the motors left and right, and then bringing it back to Audi to try to get a new motor under warranty. It got so bad that Audi was denying warranty claims on pretty much everything engine related on the S4, even to those who left it stock and had legitimate claims. And forget about buying a used turbo S4 out of warranty - that car would eat your wallet and the clothes off your back with repair costs.

  10. For once I agree with you z06ified, except most K03s with added boost is gonna increase more wear on the turbo which is what alot of us B5 S4 owners had problems with and weird leaks. I backed away from buying another 2.7T because I was always trying to track down a hose leak because I wasnt getting full boost. Not to mention my balljoints and cv joints would always need replacing. I’d trust the 1.8T with a new timingbelt tensioner more than a 2.7T leaving me stranded. Having had both 1.8t/2.7t engined B5s I’d wait 2 yrs to buy one until more data comes out, even RS4 owners are running into engine problems.

  11. blitzkrieg79, there is no doubt in my mind that mitsu is better with turbo’s, but Audi is undeniably good. When talking about Audi i was just exaggerating. Also many people were running into problems simply because they weren’t patient. They wouldn’t give the turbo’s time to warm up or cool down before driving and before turning the car off.

  12. z06- it wan’t as much as a debacle as you might think- not many “young punks” can afford a $55k car… the vast majority of S4 drivers (unfortunately) still are attracted to it as a status symbol, as opposed to a performance machine

  13. As an owner of a B5 1.8t with 150K miles on a chipped engine, I can attest to how good Audis are with turbos. I’m still on my original K03 and am getting ready for my second timing belt replacement on this thing.

    This is the news I’ve been waiting for… the turbo 6 will probably break 25 mpg on the highway, so I’ll be looking forward to buying another Audi.

    That was close… I was almost thinking of buying a BMW to get the better warranty. ;)

  14. Audi turbos are very impressive indeed even if not as good as Mitsu’s. Frankly I’m more interested in testing the new sport quattro system. The understeer problem with the current one is an ongoing problem.
