Volkswagen will soon be setting up shop here in the United States, but the same can’t be said for the German automaker’s Audi premium brand. Audi was considering U.S.-production for its upcoming Q3, but has decided on a plant in Spain for the compact SUV’s production.
Audi announced on Wednesday that its Martorell, Spain plant will begin producing the Q3 in 2011. The Martorell plant currently produces Seat vehicles, according to Automotive News. VW is the parent company of both Audi and Seat.

Although U.S. production is off the table for now, Audi will revisit the proposition in the coming years. Audi has set the internal goal of selling 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. by 2018, with U.S. production being a major part of that plan.

Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen revealed to Automotive News earlier this week that the automaker is still mulling building an entirely new U.S. production facility or simply buying an unused plant. However, it remains possible that VW could share its new Tennessee plant – set to open in 2011 — with Audi.
