Audi will cease production of its RS4 range beginning in November of this year. The RS4 sedan will be the first to go, followed by the Avant later this year and the Cabriolet in early 2008. The current RS4 is based on a seven year old platform and will be replaced by an all-new car riding on Audi’s MLP platform.
Audi is preparing to launch its all-new A4 — the car that underpins the RS4 — but hasn’t announced a time frame for S4 and RS4 variants. Until the performance models arrive, the standard A4 will be the only model available.
It remains to be seen if the gap in Audi’s lineup will prove detrimental to the German brand. The timing leaves Audi without a competitor to Mercedes‘ C63 AMG and BMW’s M3, two very capable alternatives.

The B7 is completely different than the shared B5/B6, but be on the lookout for a 520bhp V8 from Audi.

I almost wonder if the timing of the drop isn’t done on purpose. It seems to me that when Audi released the current RS4 equivalent cars from MB and BMW were looking pretty dated by comparison. So Audi had a decent window in which they were manufacturing what was arguably the best car in this class. Now, having had their fun, Audi doesn’t even bother going head-to-head with the new M3 and C63. I think they probably could’ve done OK, even well, but I can see some logic in participating in the market but not necessarily competing in it.

I wonder why Audi is holding off on the S4? After all, the S5 announcement came at the same time as the A5 did.
Maybe they are planning a new engine for the S4? Could they will give the S4 and S5 a 380hp-420hp version of the 4.2L FSI V8 next year, once the all versions of the current RS4 have ceased production. I bet a move like that would really get the S4/S5 noticed by some potential M3 and C63 buyers. One could also argue that it would really upset current RS4 and especially S5 owners. It might, but then progress is progress, and the S4 (and S5) could really use a power bump from its current 350hp.

i guess the new s4 will be around 380 to 400hp. and the rs4 470 to 500hp. m3 and c55 was 345 and 367hp, respectively.

Audi usually does production runs of the RS cars for 2-3 yrs. It helps with exclusivity of the model and brings more to the marque.

That may be true deutschetouring1337, but it also means that they go without AMG and M competitors for years at a time and in multiple segments at a time. Now if the S4/S5 got 400+hp and the S6/S8 got 500+hp then it would make them more competitive and the utlra-limited nature of the RS cars would be more justifiable.

Your not gonna see prices drop too much on the RS4, the RS6 yes its dropped almost half in price since its intro in 2002 but its taken 6yrs to drop compared to a 3 yr production. The RS4 engine is a true DTM derivative, 4 valve 4.2 power, compared to the old 5 valve 4.2. But if you look around Europe the RS4 B5 still sells for 28-40kk USD adjusted.
