Audi to discontinue S8 and A8 W12 sedans, VR6 motor for 2010

Audi’s high-performance S8 model will disappear for the 2010 model year, and the company will also discontinue use of the Volkswagen-sourced VR6 motor. The S8’s demise might be temporary. With a redesigned A8 expected to debut in 2010 for the 2011 model year, a new S8 could follow for 2012. As for the VR6 motor, it’s gone for good.

The VR6 engine is a 3.2-liter unit dating back to the 1990s, capable of producing up to 250 horsepower. It has most recently been used in the A3 and TT model ranges. Audi decided to drop the motor because it doesn’t fit with the company’s move toward more advanced direct-injection motors, according to Edmunds.

The company is also eliminating its slow-selling A8 W12, with a mere 100 units sold in 2008. Meanwhile, the front-drive 2.0-liter turbo TT is also gone for 2010, and the 265-horsepower version of the A4 will also go away.

HMMM…GOOD I GUESSS….. WHY NOT A NEWER V6 OR VR6 FSI TURBO RS3 OR TTRS ?? ARE THEY AT LEAST GOING TO BRING US THE 2.5 TFSI FROM THE TTRS ??

I think the answer is that V6 motor is way to weak for US market and in Europe most of them propelled by diesel anyway.

That was a dated V-6 anyway. Albeit a smooth one, I’m not sad to see it go.

If anyone is interested in a W12 a dealership by my house has a used 2004 Phaeton W12 (32,000 miles) that originally listed new for $110,000 on sale for $32,000. Maybe the nicest automobile I’ve ever been in, but I’d hate to replace those tires and get it repaired for anything. Imagine the 4-zone climate control’s cost if it went out. Ouch.

No FWD TT? What? I’m not in the market for a TT since the A4 is better, in everyway for less money, but the TT isn’t really a sportscar, more sporty coupe, so it did alright with the FWD for most of it’s buyers (women).

The S8 will be back I hope, what an awesome car. It should have been quicker with that Lambo V10 under the hood but the interior decor, B&O sound system, engine exhaust sounds, and exterior design- WOW. They nailed it.

It’s a sad day for VR6 enthusiasts everywhere. I think it’s one of the most interesting production engines of the 20th century, and don’t forget the VR6 introduced the foundational engine architecture that the BUGATTI VEYRON’s 16.4 engine is built on.

I guess not because they had some really well-built Audi’s in those movies. I wish my car could bust through a concrete wall and land on another floor on another building and still be shimmering. THAT is amazing. I mean I don’t know how they do it!?

Having owned three TTs (2002, 2006, and now a 2209), I’ve had a hard time classifying it as a sports car. Neiither have the automotive press, try as they might or want. Much of my experience from earlier days has been sports cars (whatever that means anymore). Still it is small, quick, cuts through traffic, and can take one over really long distances at speed, in excellent comfort from a driver’s perspective. I am not a woman. I go for serious cars that can haul the mail over distance in adverse weather. The major attraction is Audi’s Quattro, whcih has saved my bacon on at least one occasion. I could just as easily go with a Subaru. Well, yeah, kinda.

The 2002 was a 1.8 turbo Quattro. Except for lag in first gear, I loved it. Venturing into traffic from a full stop was an adventure. Beyond first, all was predictable and manageable..

The 2006 and 2009 were (are) 3.2 VR6, DSG, Quattros. The VR6 is linear and proved to be a wonderful engine. Unfortunately, Audi’s Direct Shift Gearbox overshadows the engine. In a sense, that’s unfair. The DSG is a marvel and catches the driver’s attention to the detriment of the power plant. Much of what makes everything so wonderful is really the combination of engine and transmission. Somehow, that may have been lost on most. It certainly took me a few miles to figure that out.

My only quibble with the 3.2 VR6 is fuel economy. While on a particular journey I could knock out more than 30 mpg (one time hitting 33) with the 1.8 liter, the 2006 3.2 was returning 28 or 29. The 2009 gives 26 or 27, but it only has 6K miles on the clock. I expect it will hit its stride after 10K miles.

I seriously considered the 2.0 when I bought the 2009. That would have been my preferred choice. At that time, it did not come with Quattro. (Maybe it does now.) I’m really looking forward to what Audi can offer the US market in smaller dispalcement, even more efficient, high performance.

If Audi offered a 2.0 liter, turbo diesel, giving about zero to 60 six or so seconds with Quattro, its magnetic shocks, and Direct Shift Gearbox….

Hopefully, and likely, they will be replacing the 3.2L with the newly released 3.0T used in the new S4/A6/upcomming S5. I do think the A4 will need something to bridge the gap between the 210hp 2.0T (turbo) and the 340hp 3.0T (supercharged). I think a detuned version of the 3.0T would be great. Or use an uptuned 2.0T like the one in the TTS. Put it at 280hp or so and then you would have something. As for the A3 and TT, those cars are small enough to do well with just the 2.0T. The TTS/TTRS provide the more grunt for the TT as it is.

I think this is a good move. The only thing that remains in question is what about the 3.2L that they just started using in the Q5. Too big for a 2.0T and too small for the 4.2L V8. The only thing that makes sense would be the 3.0T and that would great. No word on this though.

Jake66 – The TT and A4 are not even close to comparable so it is dumb to say that the A4 is better for less money. DUMB!!! As for FWD, I don’t think Audi should offer FWD in ANY of their cars anymore. They are working on getting rid of it as is. Quattro is what separates Audi from the rest and w/o it you just have the rest… Maybe it is because I live in Michigan, but FWD Audis virtually don’t exist, women or not, you can’t buy them.

yeah i think “frontTrak” Audi’s are sold mostly in the southern regions where basic luxury (not performance oriented) buyers couldn’t tell or care about the difference, ignoring wet performance/safety… all to save a grand or two ($10-20 per month on a finance / lease )

why detune the 3.0T unless it will save a lot of cost for Audi AND the consumer??? if not just DROP IT IN !!! but i still think the should bring the TTRS and RS3’s inline-5 2.5T FSI to the U.S. in something !!! i would live to have either of these engines in my next car ! miss my old B5 S4 Quattro V6 Bi Turbo sometimes…. the A4 1.8T , in the winter, was also a lot of fun and very confidence inspiring, especially with some nice snows

Nobody wants to pay 6 figures for an Audi Sedan. That is why Mercedes out-sells Audi in the full size class, 40 to 1.

That VR6 should have been cut the mintue the 2.0t came out. VR6=heavy, over priced, under powered and terrible gas mileage.
