Audi to expand U.S. premium small car lineup

10/06/2009, 1:29 PM

By Drew Johnson

With an eye on the ever-expanding premium small car market, Volkswagen’s Audi brand is planning two new models for the United States market. Both new models will be based on existing Audi cars, but will offer a fresh twist that should make them relevant in the U.S. market.

According to Automotive News, Audi is mulling a plan that would see the Europe-only A2 small car sold here in the U.S. However, unlike the current A2, the U.S. version would be a battery electric vehicle, making it ideal for city dwellers. No word on when the A2 EV would hit the market, but with a production version of the e-tron concept planned for 2013, we’d expect a similar timetable for the smaller EV.

In addition to the electric A2, Audi is also considering a unique A3 sedan for the United States market. The A3 is due for a redesign in 2012, at which time Audi will expand the range to include a convertible, wagon and crossover. During that redesign, Audi could also add a sedan model to the A3 lineup, which would likely be reserved for the U.S. market.

A smaller Q3 crossover is also planned, which could reach our shores in 2011 or 2012.

The A2 was the Audi Aztek.

That new A1 would be a great add to the line-up.

I’d love to look at a 2012 A3 to upgrade out of my ‘08 Mazda 3… timing perfect, and I think I’d like the styling. How about a TDI option?

“Premium” in German means”Cost more to fix”. Save your money and buy a quality car from General Motors Buick or Cadillac divisions. Audis are for idiots with more money than brains.

so would an A3 sedan be sort of like a premium Jetta?

I wish they’d bring over the 3-door A3. Amazing how much nicer they look than the 5-door. Just the right proportions.

Hahaha! Actually when it comes to Audi for once I actually agree with NMOFG. Sorry to you Audi fans, but it’s true, Audi quality is pretty poor and they aren’t cheap to fix.

Off topic– There was an ad that was from GM: Enclave vs. R-Class
See What the Buick Enclave Offers That Mercedes R-Class Doesn’t.

I don’t see how the Enclave compares to the R in any way… But thats just me

GTI = $23-30k GTI-R = $32-34k Umm… Where are you going to put this premium hatchback when there is one already for your brand in this price range?

It’s starting to look like VW is following GM’s lead in creating a model/brand for every taste.

I like Audi. But it seems they are pulling a Mercedes and BMW. A small player in terms of % is going to have more models than GM. I know they will be sharing a lot of parts but this is ridiculous. I think 4 versions of the A3 is a bit much.

The really excited ones will be the tow truck drivers and Audi service departments. They’ll see an even higher profit once these pieces of sh1t hit the road (breakdown lanes).

NMOFGM, don’t forget that the Audi’s will be stranded beside the Chevy Volt POS that GM thinks will change the world and revive their image. Yeah right………..

Model proliferation is going to far, but they feel the need to keep up with BMW and MB. I dont see the economics in so many models, just stealing sales from each other.

For instance,we dont get the Scirroco supposedly because it will just steal sales from GTI. But they want to send us 5 flavors of A3.
