A report coming out of England suggests that Audi is in the early stages of developing a vehicle that will fill the gap between the Avant-badged station wagon models and the Q-badged lineup of SUVs.

If the rumor is to be believed the car will be called either V3 or V4. It will ride on Volkswagen's new modular MQB platform and it will borrow its entire range of four-cylinder engines from the German automaker's parts bin.

Audi will reportedly launch a hybrid version of the car that will combine a 1.4-liter TFSI four-banger with an electric motor that churns out approximately 107 horsepower. The drivetrain could later make its way to other members of the Audi lineup.

The V3/V4 will slot above the A4 and it will boast a longer wheelbase, longer front and rear overhangs and a taller roof. In short, it will be to the A4 what the Citroën DS5 is to the C5, or what the BMW 5-Series GT is to the 5-Series.

The taller roof doesn't mean that Audi is developing a minivan; the German automaker has no desire whatsoever to take on the Town & Country. Instead, the V3/V4 will be a niche vehicle that will appeal to buyers who are after a well-equipped car that is roomier than a wagon and offers a taller seating position. Sources indicate that the car's silhouette will be similar to that of the SEAT Altea.

If the V3/V4 is indeed given the green light for production it will likely be introduced as a concept car in 2014 before going on sale in 2016.
