Audi’s TT coupe and convertible have often been criticized for their lack or power, but Audi hopes the TTS models it debuted at the North America International Auto Show will remedy the problem. While Audi has yet to announce U.S. pricing, the German automaker did release UK pricing today.
Both TTS models are powered by Audi’s turbocharged 2.0 TFSI engine, rated at 272 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.
When that power is routed through a six-speed manual, it takes just 5.4 seconds for the coupe and 5.6 seconds for the convertible to reach 62 mph from a stand still. Audi’s dual-clutch automatic transmission reduces the cars’ 0-62 sprint — in either guise — by .2 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.
The TT-S will also feature LED running lights, 18 or 19 inch wheels, brushed nickel sideview mirrors, a quad exhaust system and unique badging. Audi’s magnetic ride system will be standard on both models.
The TT-S will first be available in the UK, starting in mid-2008. UK pricing will start at £33,380 for the coupe model and £35,380 for the convertible.

Why is it that Audi almost always carries the worst performance numbers in it’s respective market? I’m sure this TT will be priced around $55,000 with decent options. With that price tag, this TT is going head to head with the Porsche Boxster S. There is just no way this 272hp roadster will come close to the performance of the Boxster S…0-60, 1/4 mile, slalom, etc. The question to ask is why does Audi carry such a premium for cars that underperform the competition? The A4 3.2 underperforms against the MB C350 and the BMW 335i. The A6 underperforms against the MB E class and BMW 5 series. I honestly can’t understand how Audi continues to build cars that underperform the competition yet still asks prices as high or higher then the competition. Not to mention the resale on an Audi is awful after 2 years…yes, much worse then a MB or BMW. I have to agree the styling, although somewhat bland at times, is generally attractive. However, the competition also produces good looking cars. I’m at a complete loss as to why someone looking for a German peformance sedan/coupe would choose an Audi over BMW and MB, and in this case Porsche??? Someone please explain!

anderson_b76, you have no clue about the audi line up. Here is the break down vs. BMW
M3 = RS4
335i coupe = S5
335i sedan = S4
330i sedan = A4 3.2
325i sedan = A4 2.0T
328i coupe = A5 2.0T
Works the same for 5-series. You need to understand the Audi lineup before you make long winded remarks about how they are beat by MB and BMW. I have driven all cars in that line up besides M3 and can say Audi wins in all of them besides the M3.

I guess this is supposed to compete with the BMW M-coupe, which has 330hp/262tq starting at just under $51000. I’d take the M-coupe over the TT-S every day, although I am betting the TT-S will be priced under the M-coupe, since the top of the line TT right now starts at $41500. Audi would be incredibly stupid to price it above something that can out drive it.

KeithK…before you try to correct someone you should really take the effort to understand what you are trying to talk about. First of all, BMW does not make the 330 anymore…get a clue! The S4 starts at $48,610 for the sedan, which is more then $10k more then the starting point of the BMW 335i and thus not in the same market. In fact the the A4 3.2 has a starting price of $36,300 which is within $1,000 of the starting price of the BMW 335i, which would tell you that the A4 3.2 and 335i are indeed in the same competitive market. Not to mention, every car magazine recognizes that the A4 3.2, BMW 335i, MB C350 are all head on competitors. Also, I’ve owned a MB c350, Porsche Boxster S and Audi A6 2.7T, and of course have driven everything in the $60k and under price as I’ve shopped for these cars.
Same can be said for the next market…
Audi A6 3.2=$42,950 starting price
Audi A6 4.2=$56,300 starting price
BMW 528i=$44,300 starting price
BMW 535i=$49,400 starting price
BMW 550i=$58,500 starting price
SAME MARKET
So again, before you question the car magazines, someone who has owned a majority of these cars and the Product Managers of the car manufacturers, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT and understand how price justifies these two car markets not horsepower. Again, it is clear to anyone who is in the know, that Audi doesn’t compete dollar for dollar against the performance of BMW or MB. KeithK…consider this a free lesson!

KeithK….by the way…the only reason Audi started making the RS series was the S series wasn’t good enough to compete with the MB AMG and BMW M series. By the way, if you think the Audi RS4 can beat the new BMW M3 or MB 63AMG, you’re really at a lost.

Used TTs are kind of like used Chrysler Crossfires: bought at the right price they are a bit of a bargain if you want German engineering. Unfortunately if you have to get one while they’re new be prepared for a big hit if you have to let it go early. A friend recently lost 15k Cdn in slightly over one year- and he bought used to begin with! I drove it (225 horse) and it was a fun ride, but not something I’d want for everyday use.

I don’t think cars are bought based on horsepower. I read tat most buyers gun for the looks. There fore argument whose horsepower cost more is irrelevant. Roll Royce used to not to publish horsepower at all. The brochure was stating “adequate power”.

Nobody who’s driven both worth a damn (except for around the block maybe) would make that statement The Audi A4 is a sporty sedan, the 3 Series is a Sports Sedan. RWD versus (very) front heavy AWD wins every time. The Audi’s cheaper generally across the line compared to BMW, especially with AWD, and they do look nice. That’s why they sell. Not their comparitive driving dynamics. That’s why they’ve won every single magazine comparison that I can remember reading.

Yeap, I agree 100%. Audi has its certain combination of charms that can only be appreciated in person, not on paper. Besides, at this level of performance, it’s whoever willing to risk going to jail that’s going to win a street race. If someone’s looking for a track unit, they shouldn’t be looking at luxury.

I seriously doubt they’ll ever do a RS version on a very small car such as the TT due to technical issues. Plus the price would probably be high enough to cannibalize A5 or even S5 sales. And IMO Audi needs to focus more on each models as opposed to making so many new ones. Heck their planned crossovers aren’t even out yet.

The standard 3.2’s 0-60 is actually 0.1 sec faster than this new TT-S. The 3.2 is also available in the much coveted magnetic suspension. So what exactly is the advantage of the TT-S? Better slalom times through less weight? At how much more $?

1, Lotus elise will outrun it
A, Whats your top speed?
B, You could also outrun it in a souped up boy racer car! stupid argument its not all about speed.
C, Only midgets fit in a Lotus its a shopping trolly with a high power engine.
2, BMW comparisson - if you would actually buy one of these new generation Chris Bangle right off’s! The Audi TT 3.2 has been on the track with the Z4 (yuck) and the times were the same (see youtube fifth gear TT vs Z4).
3, Depreciation is bad like a chrysler!
The TT has just won an award in the UK for being the car with the lowest depreciation in its class! The crossfire is bloody awful and depreciates like a brick!
4, The M3 against the RS4 well in the UK we have a program called top-gear and they rate the RS4 better.
The new M3 wasnt as good as expected here, very poor.
5, The guy who says the TT wont beat the Boxster etc, its not even out yet, how did you read the future. Boxsters are everywhere. the deisgn never changes much so you could buy a three year old one and it would still look new. They are everywhere in the UK about as unique as mens shoes!
+ if you add options to the basic price of a porker “for example a steering wheel” it adds about 5,0000,0000 pounds to the price (and the interior is
sh*te.
6, Audi have the worst performance figures in the market. Absolute BS dont even need to look at this one, if you beleive it just do some google searchs. The guy who wrote this is a BMW fanboy. Luckily most know that BMW drivers are like this and their cars are ugly with poor interiors (and arrogant drivers). Also mentions resale, not sure about the US but Audi resale is higher in the UK than the BMW in most classes.
The OLD (current) RS4 has also come out better than the NEW M3 in many car magazines and it is rated higher.
This all leads to Audi growth (check the stock market) increasing more than BMW in the same period.
Audi on the UP - BMW on the down.

I’ve had both enthusiasts and regular guys checking out the E Class, 5 Series, and the A6. They ALL prefer the A6 due to its combination of luxury, feel, and balanced performance. It’s all about the yin and yang. If you want real performance you don’t get a premium brand, you get a cheap completely retuned unit for track. The opinion of Audi is changing and it’s becoming the true luxury to the people who are in the know.

scook2003, Audi is re badged VW with some extra niceties. At the end of the day, you can get the same mechanicals in most (not all) VW models. TT is an exception, there is no corresponding VW. A3 shares platform with Golf/Rabbit, A4 with Jetta (US model, don’t recall what it’s called on another side of the pond), A6 with Passat. A8 has no equal, but in US Audi may sell 10-15 thousands of those per year (or may not).
In US VW is low quality brand (bellow Hyundai and Kia) and there is little reason to believe that Audi is much better. Although it probably is, since Audi’s are screwed in Europe not in jungles of Central America.

autonut: I think people need to understand that the TT-S is very similar in performance and purpose as the Cayman S. But a fully loaded Cayman S with upgraded suspensions is 20K more expensive than the Audi. Sure you can say the 335ix is just as fast and may costs slightly below the TT-S. But for the sheer balance of handling and power, I highly doubt the TT-S can be bested by anything other than the Cayman. The Boxster’s handling isn’t as great as people think, so that should be out of the comparison.
