Audi launches TT 2.0 TDI Coupe and Roadster

Audi has announced that it will begin offering a diesel-powered version of its TT Coupe and Roadster. Dubbed the TT 2.0 TDI quattro, both the Coupe and Roadster will be powered by a 2.0L turbo diesel — producing 170 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Audi touts the cars as the “first series-production sports cars to feature diesel engines.”

According to Audi, the TT 2.0 TDI Coupe quattro can sprint from 0-62 in in 7.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 140 mph. The Roadster is slowed by a slightly heavier curb weight, but still sprints from 0-62 in 7.7 seconds and hits a top speed of 138 mph. The only available transmission is a six-speed manual.

But despite the TT’s sporting nature, the diesel powertrain allows the TT 2.0 TDI quattro to achieve 44 mpg in Coupe guise and 42 mpg in Roadster form.

Audi showed another diesel-powered sports car at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show — the R8 V12 TDI — but has yet to announce if it will make production. No word if the TDI TT will be available in the U.S.

With the talk of gas hitting $4/gallon by spring, 44 mpg looks exceedingly good! Of course diesel prices are soaring too.

I wonder whats going to happen with all those guys with giant SUV’s when gas prices hit even higher. By next year it will cost about $100 to fill up a Yukon or any other similiar type SUV. Used Escalades are a bargain but who would want to spend $400 a month on gas?? Are we the only country in the world that doesn’t see the benefits of diesel? European’s are smart and investing alot of R&D in diesel technology. I guess this is typical of American style business. Never a long term outlook, only instant gratification.

If this is the future I can live with it. Hybrids be damned.

Seems a little slow. Renault, M-B and BMW have all released new 2.0 diesels all with 200 Hp and over 320 lb/ft torque seems they are about to lose their leadershipd.

“first series-production sports cars to feature diesel engines”

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.

and from the time begin… Audi marketing lies !!!

HAHA, bull**** !! so the Alfa Romeo Brera and Alfa Romeo Spyder with more powerful Diesel engines than this ****ty german car are not sport cars?, such a bunch of idiots, they only know how to bring nice commercials… that could be related to any car BTW not just Audies, so cut the bull**** car nazis.

Come on, just google Alfa Romeo Brera and Alfa Romeo Spyder and tell me they are not sports cars… ROFL

and now this is gonna hurt, a rather ‘old’ Mercedes-Benz C30 CDI AMG SportCoupe, a model from 2002 with a 231 HP Diesel engine would eat this Audi any day of the week and twice on the weekends !! LOL

I withdraw my statement above. I should have said, “Audi’s have too much VW DNA for my tastes.”

It cost already about $100 to fill up SUV in California. The gas around SF about $4/gallon and if tank is near 25 gallons (which is not unusual for SUV) here is century worth of bill.
Maybe Audi means that it is first 2 seater diesel? BMW have decent accommodations for 4 people (2 with shorter legs and preferably not very tall front seat occupants for 3 series). Alfa’s do have great diesel mills, and they produce more ponies and torque but I believe their engines of higher (2.2L) displacement. Anyway, Audi does stretching diesel significance here (or LLN since who on my side of the pond aware of cars in Europe? Very few do).

Bimmer, they meant “first diesel sports car in THE USA”, not the whole world.
