Audi pays $927M fine to settle emissions violations in Germany

As part of the agreement, the company has admitted responsibility for its role in the scandal.

Audi has agreed to pay 800 million euros (~$927 million USD) to settle charges of diesel emissions violations.

The fine is mostly focused on disgorgement of economic benefits, with a seemingly paltry penalty of just $5.8 million for negligent regulatory offenses.

Prosecutors faulted Audi leadership for failing to properly monitor its regulatory compliance division and consequently allowing illegal emissions systems to be used in diesel engines sold across the globe starting in 2004.

"Following thorough examination, AUDI AG accepted the fine and it will not lodge an appeal against it," the company said in a statement. "By doing so, Audi AG admits its responsibility for the deviations from regulatory requirements."
