The production electric car record for lapping the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife race track in Germany has just been set by Audi and its R8 e-tron. The car, piloted by racer Markus Winkelhock, managed to circle the track in eight minutes and 9.099 seconds.

The all-electric sports car makes 375-horsepower and averaged nearly 95mph on its record-setting lap. Audi is trying to prove that electric cars don't need to compromise performance and speed. The car differed in one significant way from the production version that is due to arrive at the end of the year. Its top speed was bumped up to 155mph, up from the artificially limited 124. Either car is said to be capable of reaching 62mph in 4.6 seconds. Winkelhock took another R8 on two more laps around the 'ring, this one limited to the production speed, and set a best lap time of 8:26.096.
The lithium-ion battery back can store 49kWh of energy, which can produce a range of up to 133 miles. The car weighs 3,924 lbs thanks to generous use of aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced plastic.

Audi won the 24 Hours of Le Mans race earlier in June as well using hybrid-electric R18 e-tron quattro race car.
