Audi’s “Truth in 24″ film to debut on ESPN next month

Audi’s “Truth in 24″ documentary, which covers the automaker’s somewhat unexpected victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year, will debut on ESPN on March 20. The movie will air at 8 p.m. Eastern the day prior to the 12 Hours of Sebring race. Leftlane had an opportunity to view the movie at a special presentation after the North American International Auto Show in Detroit – and we came away impressed.

Narrated by British actor Jason Statham, the NFL Films-produced documentary was both engaging and insightful, despite the fact that we knew Audi won the race. Beautifully shot, the film walked a fine line between information and over-hype, meaning that it did not feel like the PR tool it is obviously intended to be.

To that, we give credit to NFL Films for telling a fascinating story exactly the way it transpired – not sugar coated in the least.

The story follows Audi’s bid to win yet another 24 Hours of Le Mans in the diesel-powered R10 TDI race car. Unlike previous years, Audi actually faced serious competition this year when fellow motorsports gurus Peugeot introduced a heavily developed 908 race car. Despite stiff competition, Audi’s #2 R8 TDI, piloted by Allan McNish, Rinaldo Capello and Tom Kristensen squeaked out a victory.

We wholeheartedly recommend you set your TiVos to ESPN in March – go ahead and do it now – for this fascinating documentary. Even non-motorsports enthusiasts will find it an engaging, well-narrated and intricately woven tale worthy of serious attention.

It didn’t feel to LLN like a PR tool? It feels like one to me. Anyway, I’m glad LLN enjoyed the movie.

Its nice to see that if Audi/VW hasn’t received the good graces from the government in its TDI program, they’re kicking the door in commercially. The diesel market, for some reason, has been consistently rejected in the USA. Diesel is less expensive to make than refined gasoline, but do to popularity across the globe, our government’s stubborn refusal to drill, stupid additives, and higher taxes diesel remains unpopular.

Can’t wait to see it.
