Piablo — I read one of the ways these wildfires spread is from flaming animals. I little bunny, who is on fire will run into a new area to ignite a new fire.

Piablo, actually the political element of the topic is the part that people are interested in discussing, it just so happened that it remotely has anything to do with cars. That’s my real issue.

Dr*Manhattan – The ironic thing about those wildfires, is that is was self induced by the very people trying to save the forests and atmosphere in the first place. Environmentalists banned all logging in these forests. At the same time, these forests were being chewed up by bark beetles which effectively killed millions of acres of forest over a period of years. Since these forests could not be logged, they essentially were acres and acres of firewood just waiting to be ignited. Had loggers been able to go in and clear out these dead trees and replant new ones, there would not have been these forest fires at the current extreme and as you said, release however many “pounds” of gases and carbon in to the air.

Veda – This topic is about the California Government suing 90% of the auto industry. There just might be some political intonations here… It’s okay, we can talk about these things.

I have no doubt there will be a huge backlash as a result of this publicity stunt. Global Warming is an issue that will have public figures clammoring to out-do eachother with the most over the top response. I mean, we’ve got Richard Branson donating $3billion to combat it. Al Gore is making a career out of it. And plenty of scientists are getting research grants to study it. See, there is plenty of money to be made off Global Warming. Take a look at the movie MI:2. There’s a lot of money to be made by presenting a problem, then also offering the solution!

I don’t have any specific statistics, although I am sure if the state of California could prevent even one of their seasonal out-of-control wildfires per season, the release of carbon into the atmosphere would mitigate the pollution every single car in the state.

wasnt there a guy recently that gave a prize to the 1st company to build a vehicle that could go to space twice in less then two weeks…look at what came of that. now imagine if it wasnt something so complicated…oh idk like gas mileage. we would get some really kick as cars. look at VWs Ecoracer. i would by that in a second! Manufactures would have to make small lightweight cars, put a diesel engine in there and you have a really good, fun to drive car. keep the price low and the style high and bam instant classic

somebody needs to sue this guy as soon as he gets in a car…maybe he will realize how stupid it is. if thye want more efficient cars its better to give the manufactures incentive to do so. i said it in the earlier post…what if CA gave $1bil to the 1st company to sell 250,000 cars that get 75mpg. you know everyone would try to win that. and in turn every major manufacture would have a super efficient car. you catch more flies with sugar…

If California really wants to help curb global warming, they should address pollution coming from industry, power plants, etc. Not cars. Make the power grid more efficient. Mandate efficiency standards for appliances.

They already have made a step in the right direction by reducing the pollution given-off by their major seaports. But don’t focus on automobiles. Everyone does that. It’s so annoying.

Why do people drives a cars? Why do I drive a car? Because, generally speaking, I freaking have to. And that’s my point exactly…

What about when GM lost $65 million (remember inflation) in 1921, and the leading the business strategists concluded that the auto market was saturated and the only way to increase GM’s sales and restore its profitability was by eliminating its archinemisis: electric railways and eventually sound and responsible transportation? We love cars because that’s what we’re used to and what we grew up using. Poeple don’t like to change, and those people still think everything is fine and dandy. What’s evolution and adaptation all about? I don’t know? Change for the better? It’s hard to change for the better and not be a sheep when the greediest are the most powerful.

Every single day when I’m part of the herd in traffic, I wish there was better public transportation nationally (excluding the obvious cities) E.J. Quinby, president and founder of the Electric Railroader’s Association, wrote a letter to the U.S. attorney general, that GM had combined with Standard Oil of California (Chevron), Phillips Petroleum, and Firestone, to form National City as part of “an organized campaign to deprive the American public of their splendid electric railway systems…” Not to say electric railways would have prevented global warming symptoms, but it would have exponentially decreased emissions by allowing urban planners , society and infrastructure to organize in a logical way rather than expanding into strip malls…and driving absolutely everywhere.

A lot people don’t know or forget about that history, and many may not believe it either. But that’s why we live in a America!-to make ****loads of money off other stupid people and sscrewem!

The point of the lawsuit is to annoy the automakers, so it has precisely done what Lockyer expected almost immediately after it was filed. But Merchant’s facts are also spot on and the abuse of the legal system as a court of public opinion regarding the issue of global waming should be vociferously opposed, if not condemned.

Since I live in California and my wife drives a Scion, am I somehow responsible for global warming? Like they say, guns don’t kill people, people with guns kill people…..ok, sorta like they say. I would think it would be passed down to people who purchased and drove those cars, not the manufacturers. Did the manufacturers intent the cars to be driven in such an evil way, or did we car buyers drive the cars and create the polution? Ah Ha – I think I’ve stumbled onto the next lawsuit. California suies all car owners, it’ll be the richest state in the the union!!! But wait, would it have to sue itself for providing public transportation, building factories, you know, all those evil things which have happened since the industrial age. Tar and feather those witches!!!!!

What a bunch of crock.

Californans have already voted with their vehicle purchases… the sales taxes of which are going to the state.

I agree our vehicles have externalities that end up costing the state money. Smog is a real issue in some of our cities, as is congestion. Roads, accident clean-up crew, CA highway patrol, hospitals… the state pays for those, and it has to pay more because of our habits. But when the state pays more, it’s paying with our money. And generally speaking, we’d rather pay those taxes that we already pay, than lose our cars.

So what’s the issue? The state already gets money from each vehicle sale… if they need more due to environmental damage, do it the straightforward way and have us vote on a tax hike. We do vote on those when we’re convinced they’re worth it… but that takes work doesn’t it…
