Johnny, forget about Alberta's oil sands. IT's hard to refine, very expensive. I don't think there's enough there for the existing earht's populations, let alone the 12-15 billion speculated by 2030.

I agree with Moto-Racer, I think there will be some serious population control starting in 15 years. Maybe not government-enforced like in China, but when the world outgrows it's supply of food and gets overrun with scum, people will think twice about bringing babies into this hellhole. Cars and mpg will be the least of our worries. I'm scared there won't be enough farmers around to produce for the world.

Citizens automobiles aren't the one's to attack with these regulations, industry is. I wonder what they're doing to punish companies that pollute at a much higher rate? Why don't I ever hear about that. Gas prices are one thing, I don't want to hear about pollution.

autonut, I'm not raising kids like him/her and I have no doubt neither are you. Gotta love the Internet; it's easy to be built like Topher Grace and pretend to be Schwarzenegger.

Back on topic, my province alone is going to rake in over 200 million this year just by selling drilling rights. There is a lot of oil left in this planet trouble is now they have to work for it. The Jed Clampett days are far behind us.

johnny, I apologies for motor-racer or whatever he is racing. Looks to me like he is quick with his mouth or keyboard at this point. He started with good intention, but could not handle whatever low level of decency we have on this post and started insults. Perhaps it is genetics or adolescence or both. The intellect level in great country of ours is at all time low at the moment if measured by our student body test results. I am sure motor-racer did not get to decent college due poor grades and low SAT (if he even took one).

On the subject of 75 mpg in 22 years: it will be easily achieved. And probably not by decree but by economic reality. Oil is $115/barrel and 3 months ago I was threatening this forum with $100 price when it reached $90. Let me remind that in less then 6 months price of oil went up 25%. Pundits are not predicting that pace to slow down. We just learned that Russia has trouble keeping up with supply and fulfilling signed contracts. Market (as in supply/demand) will force 35 mpg by 2015 and 50 by 2020.

I think that it will be like the 70s, high powered rear wheel drive cars get swapped for little tiny cars. So buy your new 08 challengers and 09 camaros now so 30 years from now they will be worth alot.

Don't forget, once the government "fixes" (aka: destroys) the ills of the auto industry, they'll shift their focus towards stopping us "ordinary" citizens and their little garages from stepping in and filling the void by rebuilding older automobiles. And those of you who think you'll be allowed to own a 30-year-old rear wheel drive gas auto... think again. Remember, there's nothing like the second amendment to protect your "right to bare cars".

"They came for my neighbor, and I said nothing."

This is proof that our government is just a bunch of communist crooks. What freedoms are we going to have by 2030? Everything will be so regulated that we will need to check our gov't issued handbook to make sure we are wiping our @$$'s legally. I can understand the 35mpg standard for a fleet. Why not just make automanufactures include an alternative fuel in their line ups along with the gasoline engine cars?

injunraiv,
Interesting approach. I understand your math, but I'm fairly certain that wasn't the EPA's thinking when they made the comment. According to LLN, the EPA says 75 mpg is needed to comply with increasingly stringent greenhouse emissions.

Whether your burning alcohol or gas, the EPA wants us to burn less of it per mile traveled.

Most of you guys aren't old enough to remember, but this whole argument sounds like the air pollution arguments of the '60s and '70s. The big evil gummint set these terrible emission standards; the auto makers said "No way! This can never happen! This is the death of the auto industry! The era of performance cars is over." Much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Now cars emit literally 1/100th the emissions of cars in the '60s; the average family car today blows the doors off the typical "performance" car of the '70s (when 0-60 in 10 seconds was serious sports car territory); average fuel economy is much higher; yada yada. And hey, the air's cleaner too. Amazing.

Even though the CAFE proposal is total speculation, 75mpg in a gas or diesel engined plug-in hybrid wouldn't be impossible (there are plug-in modded Priuses that get 100 mpg now).

I'd give auto engineers some credit for stepping up to challenges like this one.

Now cars emit literally 1/100th the emissions of cars in the ’60s; the average family car today blows the doors off the typical “performance” car of the ’70s (when 0-60 in 10 seconds was serious sports car territory); average fuel economy is much higher; yada yada. And hey, the air’s cleaner too. Amazing.

Even though the CAFE proposal is total speculation, 75mpg in a gas or diesel engined plug-in hybrid wouldn’t be impossible (there are plug-in modded Priuses that get 100 mpg now).

I’d give auto engineers some credit for stepping up to challenges like this one.

75 MPG is fine, if you redefine gallons of 'what'. A vehicle running E85 and getting 20 MPG is already getting 133 MPG of GASOLINE. So if you're just looking at non-renewable consumption, I can see 75 happening.

so what was the whole point of solar panels? i always used to turn on TV and see solar panel cars and students building them or some company doing long distance drives, so what was the whole point? that it can be done but not put it into production? seems now like a waste of time if they never went any further than just a "show".

the world has plenty of gas, nobody is running out, MPGs are stupid, we need to be looking at CO2. The 268 hp V6 Accord Coupe averages no better than 20 mpg's im sure, but it is rated as a Partial-Zero-Emission Vehicle (PZEV). Thats what standards the government should be achieving, not mileage.

It will only be a few years until they will limit the things you buy, the fuel you use and the places you go in the name of "global warming".

Don't see it coming? They already do. Look at your fuel prices, jet prices, and then economists talking about this domino effect; it's already happening.

But you retards saying it's because oil is running out; where do you have your heads, up your asses? Do you realize that in Alaska, NPR-A region was set aside some 80 or so years ago as an untapped oil reserve for the military? Over 10 million acres, untapped and it won't be tapped; because congress refuses to do so. Same with "American interests" in the Gulf Coast, Congress and other green missions refuse to allow us to do so. Russia as we speak, are setting up "claims" in the Northern Region/Antarctic 14,000 feet below sea level, and so are other nations, because they understand there are vasts amount of oil deep under. Why aren't we? American gas companies can claim there's a shortage of gas, it gets green thinking economists pants up in a wade, and it satisfies investors.

It's not about what we want, it's about profits, and I'm tired of getting ripped off. Nobodies saying we shouldn't have cars that do 150 miles to the gallon because their "clinging to the past"; I'm really tired of that sad old excuse too for a lack of intelligence.

Technology is there for vehicles that can get 60 miles to the gallon on the market today; GM, Chrysler and Ford have all done it with mid size, good looking vehicles with predicted prices around $30k. There are cars that you can build that will get 100 miles to the gallon; I've actually been considering trying it out myself, one grand and some plans. Global warming is BS; but that doesn't stop me from considering other things, like solar panels and growing some of my own food, which I already do. Pretty simple and easy, and best of all I'm not funding some bullshit company.

If 75 MPG happens, it is the end of the automobile. I doubt the American public will tolerate that or their imperial federal government. Even elitist tree huggers will not be able to afford the fuel cell vehicles. Can someone bring us back to reality? Also, the population will not double by 2030. There will be such stress on resources, war and famine will put a dent on it.
