Baby Rolls-Royce could debut in 2009

A “baby” Rolls-Royce model could go on sale within four years, according to a report by Automotive News. The car would give the ultra-luxury BMW-owned brand a much needed sales boost in mainland Europe, the report said. “If we introduce [a smaller Rolls-Royce], it will be in 2009 or 2010,â€? Axel Obermüller said in an interview. The car is rumored to be priced well below the Phantom, and perhaps closer to the Bentley Continental coupe. The car may take some inspiration from the 2007 Rolls-Royce 101EX concept, which was shown in February. In January, the Washington Post discussed the burgeoning market for high-end cars between $100,000 and $200,000 in the U.S. While sales of outrageously expensive cars like the Rolls-Royce Phantom or Mercedes Maybach are falling slightly, sales of less expensive (but equally exotic) autos are on the rise. Current examples include the aforementioned Continental coupe, and the Aston Martin Vantage.

I don’t know…

Yes, I understand that the company needs make money and that the Bentley is selling well and that the ultra high-end market is very small. But, still…moving RR down-market is sacrilege. Especially since Mercedes is set to price the new 2007 S65 AMG close to $200,000.

Jon, when I was in London some time ago basic RR’s were everywhere, like seeing Lincolns in NY. I think maybe they trying to get back some of the CEO, upper management, clients they used to sell to. The present RR’s are very expensive/high end compared to what they used to be. Just a guess.

Rolls need this model to prop up sales. Just make it a little bit sportier with a new body not too derivative of the current range.
