While we are all focused on the domestics "failure to compete", all the while transplant manufacturers are busy asking the EU and other goverments for exactly the same type of "bridge loans" as eveidenced by this very site regarding Toyota under the guise of "producing fuel efficiency for the future". They are doing this quietly. You do not hear their politicians calling for the CEO's heads or the failures of these from thier countries. Granted Toyota, PSA and Honda have a little more liquidity however it does show that the fuel, housing and credit crisis effects all. Ford and GM in particular because of the very nature of thier business that being commercial vehicles. How many Toyota, Honda or PSA vehicles do you see at your utility company, job site, goverment or construction sites? Maybe .5%. What market was killed by the three crisis's? These are high profit vehicles that are essential. Sales of class 1 to class 7 trucks have fallen off more than 50%. But to treat the CEO's of these companies the way our Senate did is shameful and embarassing. Yes Borat is right about things going on and that many Asian manufacturers build thier vehicles here however the overall impact on the economy IE; supplier content and direct influx of cash far exceedes what the transplants do. The UAW and the manufacturers complancy in UAW demands has done more damage to our industry than any other factors.

You know, I thank the same way, forget the quality issue, the Big 3 still have a large loyalty base, but they are more for truck's and sport cars, the Mustang's, the Camaro's the Challengers, that's why you see them making a come back.

Now let's see where we full off the wagon, the trendy SUV, high gas price, the crash of the housing market, to mush credit, mostly all the refinancing going on, all of this hurt the Big 3, as for the Unions, how can you compete to a 12 to 1 work force ratio in Japan, that's "12" workers in Japan getting the pay of "1" U.S. worker, How mush is that, HOW MUSH! Ya they can have better quality, they employ more people to over look the assembly line, it's simple math.

At the end the U.S. auto makers will come out of this mess, how long, what brand they will cut, how many more dealers will close, who knows. Heck Pens** <(I'm can't say the full name, company policy) just might close my store down and consolidate the other stores in the L.A. region, we just don't know how more further down this will go,

All personal politics aside, it's our new elected officials job to find a solution to this mess, who ever they be or in what office they sit, we need there help one way or the other, the unemployment rate is the biggest ever, every where you look stores are closing, on my block there is 8 abandon houses, gas is below $2.00 but people are still not topping off there tanks, and all sales are slow... every where.

It's sad and upsetting, we have 3 college grads as part time interns and they still can't find jobs, unless they are willing to go to India, before they were granted jobs with the company now they are talking about more cut backs, I don't know what els to say, all that's left is hope for the best, and expect the worse.....

Well said LLLL#3, and I'm not even sure that if a lot of buyers were willing to give GM or Chrysler the automotive equivalent of a sympathy f*ck and buy one of their products over an import brand it would make much difference right now. They're simply in too deep and they've been digging the hole for an awfully long time. At least Ford appears to have a ladder.

@ yarddog82abn, the whole damn affair both angers and saddens me. WTF happened to our home teams? I pretty much know but it just pisses me off. I feel for both the Saturn dealerships and owners as they just got handed the shaft. I am sure the Pontiac dealerships are empty today too. Hell, I don't think anyone has walked into a Chrysler dealership in a blue moon; Jeep still has some stragglers. Hummer might as well ship its remaining inventory over to Dubai and be done with it. This is just f'd-up.

Borat & Lariat, you guys have good points,
I did forget to mention that I sell commercial trucks, and at average they get over 100K miles run-up on them, by most fleets, even that most of the trucks don't need major service, but still luck of the draw not all trucks come off the assembly line the same...

@yarddog82abn, any way you slice it this is not good. GM's Larry Burns was on NPR this morning and said GM could be gone by the end of this month, and he said it in a solemn manner.

yarddog82abn, folks are still driving 60's and early 70's muscle cars without warranties. Warranty is a concern, but before warranty the resale value is a bigger issue. It is either you drive your vehicle into the ground or ... you have to drive it into the ground. There is no choice if brand dies. Who would want it? You see many Peugeot or Citroen cars around US? Citroen was very cool.

The mane concern my customers have is warranty, there's that "what if" and "what will happen" so far most of them opt. for after market extended warranty's, but still it is hurting, and others are waiting to see if they do all go B.K. are they going to have a major sale off, you can't convince every one that thing are going to be good

oldraven, in 2005 stock of GM was about $18/share. Kerkorian placed York on GM board (buying huge chunk of shares and lifting price to $25/share) with an eye on improving company and make it more profitable. In 2006 there were talks with Renault/Nissan about combining both and GM was in pristine shape according to its auditor. I owned stock in GM, I know and remember. There were no talks about bankruptcy, since in 2006 stock went to almost $40/share. According to GM supervisory board their liquidity was just fine 5 months ago. It is either embezzlement had occurred in the past 2 quarters or board and CEO/CFO have to be introduced to club fed for abandoning their fiduciary responsibility to shareholders for the past few years (I believe they did when they refuse to negotiate honestly with Renault and ejected York from the board).

I was not aware of people crying bankruptcy in 2005, not via media (WSJ, Economist etc) not otherwise. Perhaps you have access to the board the rest of us were denied.

It's not that customers are listening for the word "bankruptcy," it is because they are concerned about future service, and residual value from companies that are faltering. This is especially true given the current economic situation. No one wants to gamble today on a large ticket purchase that they might be paying for with the potential it might sitting in their garage and non-functioning with no way to fix it or having to hunt down someone to fix it.

Saturn WILL be discontinued according to bailout plan outlined by GM. As well as Pontiac, SAAB, HUMMER.

For $4/galloon argument: it usually cost the same per gallon if you buy Toyota or Ford/GM/Chrysler. I never saw discount for Jap car owners.

"import humping consumer reports readers" have been buying imports (actually mostly made in US by jap brands for over 30 years. Since every household has at least 2 color TV's made in Asia and still watches TVs same household can drive 2 cars made here by jap label. Earth will continue to spin and we'll get over it. Mos of us wear pants (sometimes) and they are made in China. Yes, my nuts less comfortable sagging in those, but I refuse to go out without pants.

The beauty of our economy and social economic system, that we can loose industry and keep on going. We lost textiles, steel, appliances, electronics to name a few and country moving forth. Furthermore, with auto it is not a loss. Yes it is loss to shareholders of Small 2, but they already lost and discounted from this equation. We are dividing their property with an eye on providing some form of support to their employees who weren't smart enough to fight off competition and make money for employer.

We are dividing their property with an eye on providing some form of support to their employees who weren’t smart enough to fight off competition and make money for employer.

Saturn will probably fade, but assuming the continuance of GM in general, warranty and parts will still be available for quite some time. As for the argument that toyota outsold GM last year, rememebr we were struggling with $4.50/gal gas for much of the year, and the consensus is GM vehicles are fuel hogs (nevermind the reality that GM gets better fuel mileage than Toyota).

I just got done reading the bailout plan from GM, and I am not happy. I don't support government intervention generally, but see the alternative is worse. GM has wasted BILLIONS on that Saturn line, and should jettison it at the first opportunity.

Meanwhile, all the import humping consumer reports readers should think about what effect their pruchasing decisions are making and maybe think about shopping for a domestic vehicle in the coming months. They might just be pleasantly surprised.

Now that Saturn will be killed, does that mean that i can get Sky for 20K or so? Or Aura for 7-8K under MSRP?

You can't tell me that anyone in his right mind will buy anything from Saturn, unless it is on deeeeeep discount.

Last year nobody was talking about GM bankruptcy, but Toyota sold more vehicles. BTW, there is talk of bankruptcy, because GM can NOT sell their vehicles, otherwise there would be no issue.

Public does not worry about GM bankruptcy, we already know that management will steal what's not bolted to the floor and lock the doors. Rightful owners (those who own the stock) and creditors will be left holding their own genitalia. And this shall happen with or without bailout.

I've said it before. Every time the WSJ says 'Bankrupt' and 'GM', 'Ford', or 'Chrysler', in the same sentence, 100 buyers on the fence go to an import.
