I happen to be a big fan of the Malibu Hybrid. Between the 1200 Tax Credit, the overall fuel savings, and the very low acquisition cost (about $22.5K) I think the Malibu is a winner. It has superb fit and finish….If you price out the car alongside a camray you will see about a 8K difference when all is said and done. Also, the Malibu is an excellent handling car – - great for urban driving. I don’t subscibe to conspiracy theories….this vehicle was advertised as a “mild” hybrid and it delivered on that limited promise. I am so happy with the overal package that I bought 2 of the units. I wish GM much success…..it’s about time for Detroit to win one.

GM stands for ‘Giant Morons’.

GM is going to try to fix the recalled ones ASAP, and will screw it up. They will be bought back by GM due to lemon laws, and down the road, people will remember GM made hybrids with the same affection as the GM diesel cars of the 80s.

All the while, they will not even come close to meeting the demand for hybrids (which by the way are stupid). If you pay an extra $2500 or more just to have a hybrid, and you are most likely paying over sticker for a Prius, to save a few mpg, how far do you have to drive to make up the difference? All the while you are driving more which (as the liberals say) contributes to ‘global warming’ to meet your savings.

There is no cheap out; you can pay now (gas car with less mpg) or pay later (pricey car, more mpg).

And, it is more costly and less efficient to build a hybrid car in the first place. So all you green assholes that think you are saving us by driving the Prius can kiss my ass. **** you.

moto-racer13, I agree with you about 80%. I am not fan of hybrid technology, I prefer diesel as a solution. Reality is that hybrid sells in US (and actually Japan and Europe). Toyota sold over 1 million hybrids by today. Once you cross that number with 6 zeros, technology becomes very proven, albeit not for GM.

Their hybrid systems are unproven with questionable reliability, but Honda and Toyota were very smart in developing their systems long before gas prices started rising. Thats what I like about Japanese companies, they think long term and its paying off. Domestic automakers are like American society. No long term thinking, only instant gratification without thinking of the future consequences. The colapse of the US housing market and wreckless consumer debt is a reflection of the need for instant gratification.

2. Ford_Sucks, since you still using gasoline engine for all of your driving, forgo 13,000 mile oil change and change it every 3-5K miles (for your own sake). It looks like you plan to keep a car at least for 5 years, you’ll thank me later for this advise.
3. GM (management) ability to execute is much less evident then their skill for political maneuvering. It is pretty clear now that two years ago shareholders made a giant mistake allowing status quo instead of forcing merger talk with Nissan and shaking management ranks and the board.

I own a Malibu mild hybrid, and it kicks ass. The dealer gave me the rebate just like was on the regular Malibu, and I got a small discount after haggling, so I bought it for less than 21K. It is a really nice car, and at least 10% more efficient than the regular model. I drive 400 mi a week and often get stuck in traffic, and I am avg 31.5 MPG, pretty good for a nice big sedan. My brother has the 4 cylinder Malibu and he is getting 25-26 MPG.
Mild or not, the car turns off every time you pull up to a stop light. If you don’t go racing around you will get excellent mileage. I am saving $5 a week on gas. If I have the car for 5 years, I save $1250, which is about the price diff vs non-hybrid model. Also, according to the oil life system (standard on Chevy’s) my Malibu will go 13,000 mi between oil changes, and with the regenerative braking, I expect my pads will last double the norm as I often only use the brake to keep the car turned off at lights, the tranny does a lot of braking for you. I know it only has 4 gears, but it still drives real nice.
I do admit all the hybrid badges are ridiculous. I am going to debadge mine.

Honda has a great “mild hybrid” system that they say will be only a $1900 premium over a “non-hybrid” same model vehicle. So a Honda Fit Hybrid will only be 2 grand more than a regular Fit hatch…sounds like the light bulb story. In the late 1800’s, the light bulb sold for several hundred dollars in todays money equivalent, so hybrids were once costly, but now are making sense at this price. General Motors just used a cheap supplier for their batteries… Cobasys is Chevron oil owned…A battery R&D nightmare partner. Big oil in favor of a worry free battery…yah, right!!

And based on the latest reports from GM, Volt won’t be under $40K unless the government subsidizes heavily or GM finds a way to share the platform for several models at launch. Commodore, 40 MPG is no extraordinary feat, especially for a hybrid. There are quite a number of cars that already get 40 MPG. However, the Volt is supposed to be able to go 40 miles on electricity alone, which IS quite a feat for a hybrid. But, yes, that 40K price tag is VERY scary, especially when you can buy a 100% electric vehicle from Hybrid Technologies for 40K that can go 120 miles on a single charge. GM really needs to bring that price down if they want to compete.
