The BBC has decided to make a special documentary on Top Gear star Richard Hammond’s near-fatal crash. Initially, there were concerns the public television network might scrap Top Gear all together. Yesterday, we reported the show would go on. Now, it seems the BBC has made a complete 360, and will follow Hammond’s desire to have the accident shown on TV.
In late September, Hammond ‘begged’ the BBC to air his accident. He even offered to share his commentary on the accident from his hospital bed. One insider told the Mirror: “No one has asked Richard while he is still in hospital. Everyone is keen to make sure he doesn’t feel pressured into anything. [...] But those who know him well believe he will be happy to do it.”
The plan is to have Hammond talks viewers through the crash. But producers will stop short of showing the immediate aftermath of the accident, fearing it would be “too distressing” for viewers.
