I have walked downtown Detroit after 6, no problems. It’s the ghettos around downtown that are the problem.

If Detroit is no longer automotive culture then how do you explain Toyota of America and all the import-biased automotive press magazines located in Ann Arbor?

Of note, several thinkers, writers and social scientists have concluded that the automotive culture- has led to a massive dehumanization of life itself. You get into a metal box, seal yourself off from the world around you and hurtle towards a distant destination, that just 150 years ago, would have taken months, if not years, even a lifetime.

If Detroit Auto show shuts down, it can only mean one thing- America’s glory days as purveyor of the auto-culture will be finally done. We’ll drive smaller cars, waste (burn) less of mother earth, bomb fewer hapless nations, and generally become more likeable.

Anybody here ever walk around Detroit’s downtown after 6 pm? ANYBODY? I did once, and I still get the shivers. Not that San Francisco’s any better these days- its mostly some benighted neighborhoods where even the cops don’t go, that these killings have ben happening.

I can name 5 cities off the top of my head that make Detroit look like paradise, LA, St Louis, New Orleans, Newwark, Houston.

Everyone who came to the SuperBowl in Detroit had nothing but good things to say, and said the medias view of deroit was full of ****. At leat Detroit has an identity unlike other citys, MOTOWN, MOTORCITY!

Fortunately I live in a city that ranks in the top 5 on most lists, and in a very desirable part of it. Not only are our house sales on the rise in my area, but so is my home value. I bailed on Cal at the right moment. Bailing in Michigan should be a natural call for you since it is a no-brainer.

Let’s face it, Detroit as a city is either losing population quickly due to people bailing out, or due to people getting murdered. I’m not sure which of those has a higher departure rate, but no marketer wants to go to a show in a warzone. There is no car show in Baghdad, and non in Darfur, and there shouldn’t be any in Detroit either because your chances of getting out alive and with your concept vehicles not being stolen are pretty low. Detroit is a ultimate example of urban failure in America, and I don’t need to tell you what political methodology and tendencies pushed it to such a notable stature.

Anything any manufacturer wants to display in North America would get a lot more exposure at the LA show. Don’t blame Porsche and Suzuki; I’d save my coin and skip Detroit too.

NAIAS might become a second tier auto show because two low-volume companies are pulling out? That won’t do it, but if they need expansion, they need expansion. It will become second tier if the big players don’t have the room they want.
