Bentley has fitted a prototype Arnage with with a version of the Bugatti Veyron’s 987bhp quad-turbo W16 engine, a new report finds. Franz-Josef Paefgen — who heads Bentley and is president of Bugatti — is believed to be pushing for the development of the prototype.
According to AutoCar, it remains unclear if the prototype will ever make it to production or is merely a show car. If it does make it to production, look for the engine to be detuned to increase its streetability.
Currently, the Arnage uses a 6.75-liter V8 that makes 500 horsepower.

I do love the Arnage. It’s not Phantom, but it’s got classic style and performance. Respect.

I think it’s smart, because it will spread out the costs of the R&D. These cars aren’t competing in the same segment (I don’t think) so it’d be a smart match.

If Bugatti’s not expanding its model line itself, then VW has to do things like this to, as Brendino says, spready out the R&D.
The Veyron really has no competitors. I suppose you could look at price points, but other cars with a $1 million plus price-tag aren’t really grand tourers.
Mercedes puts the most powerful engines it can muster in its luxo sedans, so why shouldn’t Bentley, and one-up all the competitors in the process?

Brilliant idea. If a V-8 is good, a V-10 is great, and a V-12 is phenomenal, Why not put a W-16 in there? The more cylinders the better. And the quad turbos are a nice bonus too. Once you get to the Bentley price range, insurance and economy don’t matter anyway. I wish I could afford one. That would be such a fantastic car. Nothing like doubling the base model’s horsepower.

they ought to create an entirely new car for the W16 – something that is as edgy and new as the phantom, with this crazy engine. The arnage is old, and the body wont do this engine justice.

A4 – I second that on the W12. Why is the 6.8L pushrod dinosaur still powering these cars? Heritage? Maybe, but come on, why not a modern powerplant like the smaller Bentleys have?

A4: Good call on the W12 twin turbo. That certainly makes more sense. But at the same time, doesn’t the W12 from the Continental GT make similar power to the V8 in the Arnage now? The V8 makes what, 500 hp and 738 lb ft tq or something like that? And the W12 makes 550 hp right? I’m not sure if that torque figure / W12 hp figure is correct, but that’s what I think it is. If they could get 600 hp out of the W12 that would make the most sense, but if it would retain 550 hp in the Arnage I can see why they’d just up the ante and go w/ the W16.

Haha this is never gonna make it to production and even if it does it will probably be detuned to give out a maximum of 600bhp. Dont get your hopes up

The W12 puts out 552hp in Continental GT form but it puts out 602hp in the Continental GT Speed. It has 553lb-ft of torque in the Speed, which is significantly less than the 738, but the extra 150hp more than makes up for it. Mercedes seemed to have the same philosophy when they got rid of their torquemonster supercharged 55 AMG models for the new 6.2. The W12TT would probably make the arnage even less expensive, but would make it look absolutely pointless next to the Flying Spur.

Besides the frame on the Arnage is ancient and would not support the torque of the Veyron engine. It’s a mule.

In any case, believe it or not I didn’t get banned – I got a new computer (pieced it together myself, not bad for someone with limited tech skills) and forgot my old password/username/email combination. Whatever, too lazy to experiment so I made a new account. The funny thing is, the old DeanTJ account, once banned, works on my GF’s laptop! LOL! ****ing twats at LLN!

A V-20 would be aweful. They already have problems balancing a V-10. This would only amplify the balance problems. Not to mention the weight of the engine. Better to just stick to the proven good engine layouts like 90 degree V-8s and 60 degree V-12s.
