Set to slot beneath Bentley’s W12-powered Continental range, the new 4.0-liter V8 promises much improved fuel economy while retaining most of the 12-cylinder’s power. Bentley says the new eight-cylinder is good for 500 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque, falling just short of the W12′s 567 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.
Continental models equipped with the new V8 will be capable of sub-5-second zero-to-60 runs and a top speed in excess of 180mph.
But the new V8 should have a significant advantage over the W12 when it comes to fuel economy. The new engine features fuel-saving tech like direct-injection, low friction bearings, thermal management, energy recuperation via the charging system and innovative turbocharger packaging for greater efficiency.
The V8 also utilizes a new eight-speed automatic transmission, besting the W12′s gearbox by two cogs.
Bentley estimates that the V8s will achieve 15/24 mpg on the EPA cycle, but it still manages to sprint to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.
Although the V8-equipped Continental GT and GTC models will technically be the range’s entry-level vehicles, Bentley isn’t treating them as such. Both models will be fitted with a unique black gloss matrix grille with chrome frame and center bar, a red enamel Bentley ‘B’ badge, and a black matrix three-segment lower front bumper divided by distinctive body-color strakes. Out back, the cars get unique chromed ‘figure eight’ exhaust tailpipes, a dark lower valance and a red enamel ‘B’ trunklid badge.
The V8 models come standard with 20-inch wheels, but a bespoke, 21-inch wheel package will also be available. Inside the V8 models get an Eliade cloth headlining, new contemporary Dark Fiddleback Eucalyptus veneers and optional two-tone leather.
The Continental GT V8s come in about $30,000 less than W12-powered examples.
