Leaders of America’s big three automakers met with U.S. lawmakers on Capitol Hill to discuss the future of the domestic auto business. Tom LaSorda, Rick Wagoner, and Bill Ford pushed for incentives to increase the use of ethanol fuel. “If we want a game changer, and a game changer in very short term and in big numbers, then ethanol is a very good play for this country,” said Bill Ford. GM’s Rick Wagoner stressed the automakers are not looking for bailout. “We really tried to make it clear to them we weren’t interested in coming, asking for help for the domestic auto industry,” Wagoner said. “We were interested in talking about things that would improve the competitiveness of the U.S. economy.” Senator Carl Levin agreed the nation needs to work on “giving them support to level the playing field.” The executives plan to meet President George Bush in June.

Great, they wil meet with our pigheaded, unintelligent, piece of **** president and I’m sure will be filled in with a plethora of valued information. Ethanol is not the way to go. Hybrids, hydrogen are the way to go.

Madcapp: since when did it change? It was always 3 U.S. automakers and still is (or are you pissed at DaimlerChrysler for their merger?
). Unless of course you count the exotic car manufacturers like Saleen etc., but that’s another issue entirely. :-/

“the nation needs to work on “giving them support to level the playing field”
the big 3 sells 4 times as many cars as imports. There’s plenty of support. What’s weighing the companies down is legacy costs and bad decisions, which may require legal reform to fix.
With Bob Lutz saying “products” is the way to go, the bad decisions are turning around.
But paying retirees forever is outrageous.
With modern sky life expectancies, we should also expect the retirement age to push up to age 70. These “retirees” should be mandated to work as reserves for the companies from which they retired.
75% of our nation’s medical costs are due to the elderly. It’s time for a law to force them to pay back, or be euthanized.
