Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford made a promise nearly three years ago that cost him an estimated $25 to $33 million in earnings and he still will not accept any payment for 2008. This is despite wishes to do otherwise from the auto giant’s board of directors, according to Ford Motor Company’s 2007 annual report. In May of 2005, Bill Ford decided to deny himself compensation until the company’s automotive sector achieves a full year of profitability, without the aid of special items.
“He wants to stay true to his pledge,” said spokesman Oscar Suris on Wednesday. Once Ford is profitable again, Bill will accept payment dating back to 2008, but Suris said Ford Motor is not allocating any funds for that eventual salary. The amount is not known, and will not be disclosed until it is paid out, the spokesman continued.
The last time Bill Ford received any money from his employer came in the form a March 2006 stock award granted before the pledge. Instead of going into his pocket, Ford donated the proceeds to a scholarship fund for the children of Ford Motor Company’s employees, however.

Of course they were here first because they are an American company. Not going down? Check the stock market for GM and Ford for the last 30 or so years, they are on a down trend, then compare them to Nissan, Honda and Toyota, they are up. I am not a rice head or anti-america, but I remember hearing Ford and GM cut jobs and shutting down plans for how many times now?

A noble, but ultimately meaningless gesture financially for both Ford and … Ford.
It may however help keep Ford’s workers a little more motivated and raise morale a bit, which is good.
Unfortunately for that Bill, he’s not a very smart man … good thing he’s no longer running the company.

And it won’t take Ford a horridly long time to become profitable again. Europe is on the rise, Asian markets are on the rise, America is settling out, and they’ve already begun cutting management a few years ago. When Ford and GM do come back, it won’t be modest, they’ll be able to more strategically manage their vehicles and inventory, just as effectively if not more than Toyota. Especially since they’ve begun to acquire the parasites… err, unions trust… a wee bit.

Haha I hear you 400horseSS. I have soo much resentment towards the Ford family for the Detroit Lions. As long as the Ford family owns the Detroit Lions they will stay the worst team in the NFL.
pmpvtkc- You clearly don’t know your history. The Japanese companies are very young compared to companies such as Ford, GM and Chrysler. Toyota didn’t even start selling cars until after WWII and in the U.S until the 1950’s. Toyota also has it easy compared to the Big three which is one of the many reasons why they are remaining more profitable. 1. They don’t have anywhere near the # of retirees that they owe billions of dollars too that the big three has. 2. They don’t have to pay higher wages to their employees because with the exception of NUMMI their employees aren’t unionized. Every company reaches its peak at some point. Ford and GM reached theirs decades ago because they are half a century older than Toyota. But just like the economy it rises, it peaks, it declines and so the trend continues. How is it that GM is still selling more vehicles than Toyota and still remaining #1 if they are going to just end? Yeah Toyota is pretty much going to take over that spot but they haven’t just yet. And with the latest vehicles coming out of GM, I definitely don’t see that happening. Ford and Chrysler too will eventually rebound.

SS4LIFE GM sells more cars ((in the US) most other countries in the world buy very few American cars) than companies like Toyota because Americans buy them over the more expensive imports. Why they do this im not sure but possibly the American car buyer prefers a cheap “disposable” car to a long lasting costly one and replace it after owning it for a few years.

Ford is so screwed up. Asia is no the rise. Untill recently products for Asia was developed in Detroit by engineers who did not have a clue about Asian aspirations! Europe is doing well and pumping the bleeding American unit. But now they complain that the profits they make are not justified by giving them their due share of investment for future models.
Its just a mess… Surnames cant clear this mess…

My father drives a 26 year old “disposable” American car every day. I drive a 16 year old one in addition to my truck. American cars are certainly not “disposable”. With the high mileage maintenance costs of a Japanese car they might as well be though.
Also China is buying GM cars in droves, and Buick is the top dog over there. Holden dominates Australia, Opel and Vauxhaul do well in Europe, and Chevy is still the top nameplate here.
@Get Real,
Letting the panther platform die off is as stupid as GM was when they killed B-Body. Those BOF platforms are far more durable than unit body construction. They also allow for a very smooth isolated ride.

First off Bill Ford is doing the right thing by not taking any compensation until the company is profitable. and I don’t believe its a meaningless gesture.
It becomes meaningless if Ford does not follow through with great product by 2009/2010, and ultimately gets a professional management structure into place** This is paramount for Ford’s future-so they don’t lapse again. To be just as consistently competitive as our Japanese c****erparts, (sealing Ford kids out of making future mismanagement blunders.) This is why they came out with no or lousy products.
It would be a meaningless gesture if Ford was doing nothing at all as they were before he hired Allan Mulally to take over the job as CEO of Ford Motor. That was the absolutely correct thing to do.
Since hiring Allan Mulally Bill Ford has done all the right things for his great grandfather’s company.
Mulally has done a good job on cutting cost, taking care of buyouts, and other things to reduce the money drain away from Ford. So Kudos to Bill Ford you did the right thing guy.
Most of you GM nutless rednecked nerds come down on Ford as down and out. I don’t think so not by a Long Shot. Ford has got some life left, and has reduced their size to be swifter in the marketplace. You maybe very surprised.
And despite what some of you Chevy guys think Ford has been the Number one selling brand in America for the last 20 years not Chevy or anyone else ok. FORD is #1 Baby.
You GM or chevy guys think your neumero uno based on very questionable sales data from last year.Meaning its very subjective.
So Ford in most American eyes is still #1. And will be that way if Mulally’s and Bill Ford make the best decision for the company and so far they are.
I had some Buick Dealer whine at me for driving a Ford Taurus on his lot because he and the rest of GM’s brand had nothing to match it and beat the crap out of GM for years. And yes that is dated at this point.
However, I believe the new Ford Taurus in 2009 and upgrade again in 2012 will be something special.
The Verve/Fiesta is coming in at that time which should be great for Ford along with a Hot new Ford Explorer America- which I hope Ford will do a great job on- It looks super. F-150 is brand new with a brand new Engine I believe on the way as well. So those are 4 powerful reason Ford is going to do well.
Now the cars that Ford could make outstanding or kill. And no one knows if Ford will redo them are its Large cars- Crown Victoria-LTD?? Their is a market for Large police, fire vehicles. Taxi cabs
Small Pickup??, and ultra compact car??and totally Electric???
The question is . Is there the money to do them all?? and do them exceptionally. I think the first 4 will be most powerful for Ford and then they can build on the rest.
The other thing I would like to see at Ford is innovation. I think Bill Ford has the right man who even though has been in the airplane business adds more technology and brings Ford in another great transportation direction, but I think Ford’s sales must start to head north again before taking Ford into new areas such as its own Airplane division or robotic? Much like Honda.

Ford has an excellent reputatation in Europe, Australia, South America, China, and other places around the world. So Ford has to fix things here in North America.
Rich don’t rule Mercury out totally but Mulally is getting rid of the overlap divisions Ford bought for its own good. Such as the soon to be sold Jaguar/Land Rover. Which is an excellent idea. IF Ford can’t pool the engineering technicals together from respective division then you need to get rid of every one that includes Volvo and Mazda. So don’t whine if Ford decides even to cut Mercury for the benefit the company. Because hey if Toyota can thrive and increase its size with just 2 divisions then so can Ford, and they have something to prove! Even if its eventually just Ford and Lincoln. Hey look at Toyota- 2 divisions and their kicking ass in sales. Ford and Lincoln can do it too. We’ll see.

Ford must be really in trouble if their spokesperson is pissing and moaning on LLN.
Not to mention 23 billion mortgage note against factories and real estate holdings since not a single bank on this planet would give Ford line of credit or non-secured loan. Try to explain this management achievement.
Ford is not like Honda: Honda is highly profitable from sale of cars and finances other ventures such as marine engines, robotics (pioneer in this area on par with MIT, Carnegie-Mellon and CalTec) as well as new avionics division. FoMoCo is loosing (bleeding) money.

Autonut while you got the mortgage figures down pat for Ford @ 23 Mill. The place where you erring is the bleeding of money. Its not that bad at this point a year ago. Very bad. And before you open your yap again may I remind you that Ford has the CEO from Boeing so if Ford so chose- Al is the guy that would definitely lead Ford into Aviation once again ever hear of the Tri-Motor that might before Honda’s time!
I think this if the fundamental business model Mr. Mulally is instituting for Ford Motor is working well enoughthat Revenue is pouring in for Ford(And they do have some good products on the way); then I see absolutely no reason Ford could not become a total transportation provider for the public and get back into Aerospace,Jet Airplanes, and marine, etc, etc.
And as I mentioned since Ford Motor was in Aviation in the past courtesy (Ford Trimotor) then their is nothing stopping them except the folks at the top of Ford and how well the company is managed.
Also you mentioned Honda is into Aviation and Robotics. I like Honda too; however, the robot thing and aviation ideas started small at Honda and grew into real products. Ford could do the same is all I am saying. If Ford is successful then they would have the resources to do something great like that.
Also you want to talk about bleeding money how about GM’s 40 BILLION largest loss just this past month bigger than anything Ford has ever lost. ok so don’t just pick on Ford
