BMW 1-Series Coupe starting at $30,000

11/15/2007, 12:50 PM

By Nick

BMW this week released preliminary pricing details on the BMW 1-Series coupe, which will go on sale in America in spring 2008. U.S. pricing will start at $29,375 for the 128i and $35,675 for the 135i, with a fully-loaded car costing another ten grand on top of that.

The 135i features the same 300+ horsepower twin-turbocharged inline-six as the 335i 3-Series. Predictably, the 128i has the same powerplant as the 328i, delivering 230 horsepower.

Pricing for optional equipment on the 128i is not yet available, but the 135i can be ordered with a slew of options pushing its price tag close to $45,000.

A six-speed automatic transmission costs $1,275, the Premium Package is $3,300, the Sport Package is $1,000, the Cold Weather kit is $600, Active Steering costs $1,400, paddle shifters are a mere $100, Comfort Access adds $500, power front seats cost $1000, heated front seats are another $500, rear park assist is $350, navigation is $2,100, Bluetooth is $750, HD radio is $350, XM costs $595, premium audio is $875, and iPod adapter is $400, metallic paint adds another $475, and premium Boston Leather is $1,450.

Since many of these standalone options are included in larger options packages, adding up all the prices won’t give an accurate estimate of the cost of a fully-loaded 135i. However, taking packages into consideration, we’ve determined a fully-loaded 135i would cost $44,500.

Yeah hearing this news was a little disappointing to me. I mean 29k for a base 128i is understandable, but 45k for a fully loaded 135i?? Really? Ok you can buy a stock Vette for that price, with 400hp. BMW better not outprice this car for it’s segment. Espeically when it’s competing with cars that sticker for the high 20’s and 30k segment.

I like the 1 series, but the a la carte options are just going to kill you and drive the price up into space. Especially insulting is $475 for metallic paint…that’s a so cost item on any Toyota, Honda, Chevrolet, Ford.

BMWs are silly expensive, just silly. To me Porche and BMW get the highest premium over value for there cars. There great cars but really even 30Gs for a stripper 1-series is dumb. I’ll restore a 2002 Tii for 12-15K, have more fun and sell it at a profit after a few years of light use (yeah right to the light use part).

too bad they overpriced it. the 128 should be 25k and the 135 should start at 30k. With more stuff. I’m sure this is a very nice car, but c’mon it’s not priced right for the segment. Especially when freakin Hyundai is going to come in with a bigger, probably better equipped vehicle for 10k less. I’m sure it won’t be nearly as good, but 10k is 10k. Sorry BMW, you missed the boat on this and once you sell to the die-hards, and I am a current 3-series owner and lover and I won’t even consider this car at this price. I’d rather have a CPO 3-er for less…and a better warranty to boot.

Yeah even compared to a 350Z you can buy one of those stock for like 29k and for a nice sport or touring package it’ll cost somewhere in the mid 30’s. and it has normally aspirated more HP.

Well frylock, its good to look at other alternitaves, but the Corvette is a pile of garbage…it was always the mid life crisis car for baby boomers. You still see fat old men driving them all the time. The last time there was a Corvette worth buying, it had a inline 6. That’s been quite a few decades ago.

Madcapp,
The quality of a vehicle isn’t based on whomever buys it. By your logic an STi is garbage because ricers drive it. My point was how overpriced the 135 is not how good of a car it is. Point still stands the Corvette completely outclasses the 135 for the same coin.

This doesnt seem to make sense, for 35,000 you can get a 328 coupe, and for around 43 you can get a 335 coupe. i would sacrifice the options, keep the same engine and get the 3 rather than the 1. Maybe we are missing something that proves this car to be so high in price, perhaps we may need to see it in person?

Looking at things from a business perspective I could perhaps see why BMW priced the 1 series as such. In the US, they have a very strong brand identity as a prestigious luxury player. All of you saying that you’d rather get an evo, or 350z, (myself included) are not the market BMW is necessarily going for. It would hurt their image if a bunch of recent college grads were hooning around in their riced out 135i’s with HKS exhaust and blow off valves (not that we all would). They want to compete with Mercedes, Audi’s, and Lexuses for customers who want the prestige and image coming along with buying a luxury car, but can’t afford the current ~34K cost of entry. In that sense, they have no competition. I think 29K is as low as they could go given the fact that they had to maintain the prestige of their brand.

That said, one key thing BMW failed to recognize is the 1-series is butt f-ugly. If it was as sexy looking as a 335i then I could see people paying this price gladly, but this thing looks like the hideous 318i hatchback from the 90’s with a bangle bodykit. OK i’m exaggerating on the ugliness but it’s just too upright and boxy for a sports coupe nowadays (look at the G35 coupe for ex). I can see this thing selling moderatlely, but i predict it won’t be the homerun BMW was hoping for by any means.

BMW needs to get over themselves. Heated seats is a $500 option when GM offers it in many of their cars for $150?

POWER seats is an option?? This is a LUXURY company? I can see it in a bottom-market Chevy or Ford, but BMW?

A stupid MP3 jack is $400? Standard on GM cars now, I think Ford is doing it soon too.

Not to mention to get all the various options for just the stereo gets close to $4500. Ridiculous.

I love the 1-series, but BMW is nickel and diming this car to death. They really shouldn’t be behind the “lowly” Americans in content for money.
