I’d rather pay a lot more and get a 7-series.It’snot like this is an accord, but I’mthinking sub-40 would’ve been the right price for a loaded model.

35k is too high of a starting price point. A sport-package 135 with a manual tranny, with Bluetooth and the upgraded stereo comes in at over 37k. That’s insanely expensive.

Ok I’m hearing that the pricing is going to be even worse than this article has suggested: Closer to 50k loaded, and even worse, you probably won’t be able to find an actual car for less than $37-39k, as most dealerships wont even order a car with no options

BMW needs to get over themselves. Heated seats is a $500 option when GM offers it in many of their cars for $150?

POWER seats is an option?? This is a LUXURY company? I can see it in a bottom-market Chevy or Ford, but BMW?

A stupid MP3 jack is $400? Standard on GM cars now, I think Ford is doing it soon too.

Not to mention to get all the various options for just the stereo gets close to $4500. Ridiculous.

I love the 1-series, but BMW is nickel and diming this car to death. They really shouldn’t be behind the “lowly” Americans in content for money.

Looking at things from a business perspective I could perhaps see why BMW priced the 1 series as such. In the US, they have a very strong brand identity as a prestigious luxury player. All of you saying that you’d rather get an evo, or 350z, (myself included) are not the market BMW is necessarily going for. It would hurt their image if a bunch of recent college grads were hooning around in their riced out 135i’s with HKS exhaust and blow off valves (not that we all would). They want to compete with Mercedes, Audi’s, and Lexuses for customers who want the prestige and image coming along with buying a luxury car, but can’t afford the current ~34K cost of entry. In that sense, they have no competition. I think 29K is as low as they could go given the fact that they had to maintain the prestige of their brand.

That said, one key thing BMW failed to recognize is the 1-series is butt f-ugly. If it was as sexy looking as a 335i then I could see people paying this price gladly, but this thing looks like the hideous 318i hatchback from the 90’s with a bangle bodykit. OK i’m exaggerating on the ugliness but it’s just too upright and boxy for a sports coupe nowadays (look at the G35 coupe for ex). I can see this thing selling moderatlely, but i predict it won’t be the homerun BMW was hoping for by any means.

wow. based on msrp, the 335i sedan is only 3,300 more. basically you give up premium package in a 135i. and the 1 series is only 200 lbs lighter? this makes a 350z look like a steal at 29k.

I’m sure the 135i is a blast to drive. BUT! I can see myself paying that kind of money for it. Not to mention that it is not the most attractive bimmer. I’d rather spend a few more G’s and go for a 3-series. But that’s just me.

I hate to say it, but keep in mind that this car was designed to be driven as a performance car first: if it is actually available with decent options in the low 30’s, this won’t have any competition… even despite how fugly it is

This doesnt seem to make sense, for 35,000 you can get a 328 coupe, and for around 43 you can get a 335 coupe. i would sacrifice the options, keep the same engine and get the 3 rather than the 1. Maybe we are missing something that proves this car to be so high in price, perhaps we may need to see it in person?
