Although hybrids are America’s green car of choice, Europeans largely still rely on diesel power to squeeze every last mile out of a tank of fuel. Which technology is better is still up for debate, but BMW has launched a new 1-Series model that might be enough to change a few minds.
Dubbed the 116d, the newest 1-Series variant uses a highly efficient 2.0L four-cylinder diesel powerplant. At only 116 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque the 116d isn’t exactly a stop light king, but those modest performance numbers yield a Toyota Prius-rivaling 53.4 U.S. mpg rating — making the 116d the most fuel efficient model BMW has ever produced.

However, with a 0-62 run of 10.2 seconds, the 116d is right on par with other high-mileage models. And, unlike the Prius, the 116d comes with the fun-to-drive characteristics BMW is known for, so you can at least have some fun out on the back road. With three and five-door body styles available, the 116d will be practical to boot.

Although the 116d sounds like a great little car, there are no plans to bring it to the States anytime soon. However, Europeans will get their first crack at the 116d this March, with prices starting from £17,605 in the UK.
