When BMW launched the controversial 5-Series GT in 2009, rumors that the treatment would be applied to the smaller 3-Series immediately started circulating around the internet.
According to BMW Blog, the 3-Series GT is no longer a rumor: it has been given the green light for production and will hit the market in March of 2013.
The Bavarian manufacturer has a history of not launching new vehicles at car shows, so it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when the GT will be revealed. Sometime in late 2012 seems like a plausible timeframe.
BMW has not hinted at any specific design cues for the GT, calling it only “the alternative to alternatives, a style conscious car with the dynamic prowess to match its looks.”
The 3-Series GT is expected to follow the same overall design as the bigger 5-Series, but its roofline will be a little lower and sleeker. It will reportedly boast the same amount of trunk space as a 5-Series sedan, and even more rear legroom.
So far no technical information is available, but the GT will likely pull its engines out of the F30 3-Series parts bin.
The 3-Series GT won’t be the last member of BMW’s GT family. A 1-Series GT is said to be in the works, and will hit the market not long after the 3 GT.
