Following several spy sightings, BMW has released a teaser video of its forthcoming 2011 5-Series Sedan. Although the actual 5-Series doesn’t appear in the teaser video, the short clip does show the 5er’s “sporting and elegant design” via a kinetic sculpture from the BMW Museum.
Sources in Europe claim this BMW will move away from the polarizing design of the current model. Already under development with the internal codename “F10,” the next-generation BMW 5-Series will soften the harder lines of the current E60 with more conventional-looking headlights and a cleaner front-end design. New European pedestrian safety standards are expected to drastically alter the design of many European cars for the worse, but BMW will not only maintain its classic twin-kidney grille design, it will reduce the length of the front overhang.
As is typical of most recent BMW redesigns, this 5-Series will add some space between the wheels by extending the wheelbase nearly 10 centimeters and widening the track. The overall length will grow by less than 2 centimeters, while its height will be reduced slightly and its width increased by a fraction. A set of 17-inch wheels will be the smallest available with 18- and 19-inch wheels optional.
Under the hood, this 5-Series is expected to use variations of existing engines in BMW’s line-up. Base power will likely come from a 2.5-liter straight-6, while top-of-the-range models will use the current 4.8-liter V8. A wild card could be thrown into the mix if BMW attempts to combine its latest turbo technology with a V8 of slightly smaller displacement. Also in the works is a more powerful version of the M5’s 5.0-liter V10.
The next-generation 5-Series is expected to feature an eight-speed automatic transmission with an all-wheel drive option being available. The new 5 will also have Park Distance Control and an around view monitor system, similar to Infiniti’s Around View Monitor.
Expect a series of teaser videos leading up to the 5-Series’ world debut on November 23rd.

A real Amercan would never drive imports. This is GM Country. BMW needs to get the fock out once and for all. You’ve been beaten on the track, you’ve been trounced in sales. your reliability sucks, your quality is a joke and your cars a ugly as sin.
BMW 5-series = the next joke from Germany that can’t match the awesome CTS-V in performance and can’t even match a Ford in reliability.
Can’t wait until BMW is out of business for good.

NMOFG, BMW 5 and CTS-V is not an apples to apples comparison. Compare the STS to the the BMW-5 and you’ll see that there is no comparison. The interior of the BMW 5 blows away the STS. And exterior styling is much better on the BMW 5.

Difference is BMW will be out of business for good. NEVER COMING BACK! Many Americans like myself waiting patiently for it to happen.
Just like your POS Honda, Germany does not belong here. They should not have the rights to sell their POS vehicles here in America. Americans should not have the rights to buy any vehicles from Germany as it contributes to foreign economies rather than our own. And that goes for any unAmerican assshole who actually is stupid enough to go work for these coksuckers.
Americans need to stick by our own and continue to make GM great again. Bk or not, GM is coming back with a vengence and will be back to the 50% marketshare befoee long becasue everyone would rather drive an American made vehicle from General Motors. it’s unAmerican to drive imports.
Slowly but surely the message is becomeing clear. Witness GM’s skyrocketing sales and the continuing decline of POS japcrap brands like Toyota and Honda. Witness GM’s pinnacle of quality, reliability and desirablity while models from those failed brands don’t sell without huge incentives.
Get with the program. GM is the Standard of the World.

Funny.. that “a real American would never drive foreign car” …
America must have a lot more foreigners judging by the market share of foreign cars sold here.

It’s real! It’s a metal ball covered in plastic. The string is attached to the ball and an unbelievable amount of servos following a tiny while where the sting goes through…which is all controlled by one computer.
I actually find NMOFGM’s statement to be making fun of the US when he writes, “GM AN American Revolution!” GM is going down, which coincides with US’s economy going down. If you think GM is leading the american revolution(tumbling economy), and you approve of GM, you must also be loving our current economy! You know what I got to say to you? Here it is- FNCK OFF!
The only american revolution there is is with FORD!

i saw a recent bangle-butt m5 the other day here in st. louis…the area i live in is crawling with bmws…and it sounded good, and i like the aggressive (to me) contours of the front end on a sedan the size of the 5 series…but seriously, that back end is horrible and spoils the car for me…i don’t want to know how much they cost, but i wouldn’t want to pay that much for a car i wince at when looking at the back end…
i’ll even say something totally outrageous…i like the mazda 3 front end better than the bmw 5 series back end…
every once in a while i’ll find an old 80s m5 on craigslist and i drool a bit before moving on…something about repair bills on an old german performance car scares the crap out of me…

NMOFGM: You were a shock at first, cute for a while (and dare I say, even funny) but now you’re just downright annoying. Do yourself a favor and go curl up inside one of your Enterprise rent-a-car GMs and go chew on an interior door handle that GM uses in every single one of their vehicles. Stay in there until help arrives.

OK, stepping away from the secondary discussion for a moment –
For one thing, the bonnet will probably be much higher off the ground, overall the car will be much bigger. This is due to (as they mentioned in the article) the new pedestrian protection criteria.

Video’s not bad
Nothing to get all bothered about
Heard the stick shifts are done in the US
I’ve seen the car and I like it, except the roof is domed over the driver and it looks odd from some the side
And the front end is too tall for those pedestrian crash standards in Europe, like the 7
But the overall design is sound
I like the current 5 more
Except for the lame interiors

Zesty, Actually you do compare the 5 series to the cts. The cts is made to compete with the 5, but at a 3 series price. The cts v is put up againts the m5 not m3. And not pro one or the other, but currently the V beats the M.

Hey “Need More Oil” -
Apparantly your definition of an American is a redneck jackass from Michigan who is pissed off that his overpaid union job has been lost because there aren’t enough other unemployed rednecks that want to buy GM’s. So now you/he are going to key every BMW or Honda in Michigan because, by God, it’s un-American to use your brain and not piss away money on cars that fall apart and depreciate faster than GM stock??
I’m from Steeler country and I can assure you I’m far more “American” than you pretend to be. This country became great becasue it gives people the opportunity to compete and, if they do it well, succeed. Not because it subscribes to a protectionist policy that guarantees they will win no matter how sorry assed their product is. So you want to talk about busting China’s chops for manipulating their currency to an unfair trade advantage? Fine, I’ll stand with you. But you want to call me un-American or handcuff my wallet and tell me I can’t buy a superior product to a GM? Screw you.
What’s next, a federal law to allow the Lions to play 15 men against the Steelers? Get real. GM is exactly where it deserves to be.
