Another FACT ... this thing is so ugly that NOTHING can be done to make it desirable because it looks like a TURD.

Mixing hors d'ouevres with poo doesn't make that poo any more desirable.

I also want to know what has gone wrong with BMW. I drove a 2001 Z3 2.5i over the weekend... wonderful little roadster. Light and simple, ample power all the way up to redline, great brakes, and a buttery smooth 5-speed automatic. The design is a classic that really needed no improvement... the car still turns heads today.

Oh... did I mention that it has 96,000 miles?

What the hell is going on at BMW? First the x6 then this? What a waste of time and money developing these fugly unwanted beasts. Take some of that development money and make a light 1 series with 300 hp for $30k. Also design a new M3 that doesn't consume as much fuel as a panzer tank.

I might be the only person here, but yes, i would buy this car. It's the only expensive Bmw that won't be stolen. It's rear is so ugly most people don't like it anyway...

I gave up on trying to correct the addled brains on this site long ago, but this thread hits new lows -- and that is saying something, for LLN. Mention a Taurus or a Mustang in the same sentence, paragraph or even article as a BMW 5-series? Absolute IDIOCY. Moronic. Ignorance on an epic scale. No car minted on US soil will ever have the driving dynamics of a true European car, because Americans, as a whole, are not drivers. Americans drive cars, but they do not have a fine-grained sense of the experience, nor do they get even a tenth the driver education that other countries do. US engineers cut corners and shave at every opportunity, they build to use less steel, they design to mass-produce as cheaply as possible. The seat alone in a 5-series has more thought, engineering and detail in it than a tin box like the Taurus. As for the EcoBoost, it is real easy to brag about an engine that doesn't exist yet, and that manages to accomplish nothing particularly interesting or novel -- a twin turbo that makes barely 98hp per liter? That's fucking SHAMEFUL. There are a TON of motors from Subaru, Porsche, BMW, Audi, VW, Mitsubishi, etc. that have been making 120-140hp/liter for decades. Factory stock, with a 360cfm turbo and only 12lbs of boost (.87 BAR) my Subaru EJ20 motor made 118hp/liter and 100lbs torque per liter, in 2002, with a six-year-old boxer engine design. Now it makes over 150hp/liter with the same displacement and the same turbo, just methanol injection and a tune! NOTHING in the EcoHype motor is worth bragging about. Sticking it in a Taurus does not absolve the Taurus of being another unimaginative, primitively engineered US brick.

Back to our inline six: the inline six turbo from the BMW M3 series has been taken successfully to EIGHT HUNDRED HORSEPOWER with the STOCK BLOCK, valves and cams. Yes, 800. Check YouTube, there are plenty of videos. That inline six is a nearly unstoppable motor. EIGHT HUNDRED HORSEPOWER ON PISSWATER 91 OCTANE.

http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/partdetails/HorsepowerFreaks/Turbos/Turbo_Kits/E46_M3/11037

So, this inline six will do just fine, in one of the cars with the best handling dynamics and control of almost any car on the road within 30k of its price range.

have you guys seen the pictures of the back of this thing? the trunk opens in two ways!! this is a major breakthrough...the metal trunk lid pivots up on it's own, or the entire lid and back glass assembly lifts up like a hatch...that's amazing! certainly worth the 60k plus price tag! it's a whole new way of trunking!

Impulsive
The space shuttle’s rockets couldn’t save this turd.

Wouldn't that depend on what you wanted to do with the turd?

I'd only be interested in your OBJECTIVE idea if it guaranteed your presence in the car

As a car guy, I welcome any opportunity for additional engine options. That said, I'm curious as to how BMW are going to position this new single-turbo unit and what kind of price point it will occupy. Maybe this development foreshadows an up-rating of the bi-turbo N54's specs. One can only dream...

wasn't there a story a while ago that said the M3 would be getting an inline 6 with the possibility of a single turbocharger, I think this might be that engine, albeit in a more powerful stance

Looks aside, this 5-series GT is NOT a new model but another variation on an existing, VERY GOOD, platform. It is designed to offer a uniquie twist on conventional versitility. It is a 5-series with a hatchback.
For many of you, a good reference when considering future vehicles and formulating opions, anything Ford, GM, anbd Chrysler is doing...do/think the opposite. That is what this is.
I will take my cues from companies that are still turning profits. That's just me though.

Why don't they make a 7 series GT with rear engine, front wheel drive and a folding hardtop convertible mechanism and have a 5 year old design the exterior?

I'm sure there is a market for that! Nobody is doing it!

Not sure where to begin with you clowns.

First I hear comparisons of the GT vesus a Taurus...Anyone who compares a Ford to a BMW has never driven a BMW. The Taurus is nothing compared to this. Power, looks, refinement, drivability, etc... The only advantage it has is cost and that is because, in this case, you get what you pay for.
The MK S is closer to this but that is traditional sedan that is more in line with the 5-series sedan and not the GT.

Then Borat, either you didn't drive a 335 or you are an idiot. The 335, both auto and manual, is a 6 speed. Im not sure how you could row through the gears and not realize you are one short... Anyways, besdies taht, why would you compare a Mustang to a 5-series ANYTHING? That is not even close. Apples to Apples would be nice to actually have a valid point. The Mustang GT will stick with a 335 coupe/sedan in any situation (striaght line or twisties) albeit it won't "feel" as nice doing so. The GT500 will pretty much tear apart a 335. They aren't designed to compete. So don't.

@ bigs4610 - Really? You really believe that the SHO is a "better" car than a BMW 5-series?

For some reason people put the Big 3 on different standards than the rest. Its like the bar is set lower so if Ford FINALLY makes an acceptable car, you have people like bigs4610 saying it is incredible. BMW is over here doing calculus and the retard (Ford) can count to 100 and today (with the SHO) got to 101...

The Mustang GT will stick with a 335 coupe/sedan in any situation (striaght line or twisties) albeit it won’t “feel” as nice doing so. The GT500 will pretty much tear apart a 335. They aren’t designed to compete. So don’t.

@ bigs4610 – Really? You really believe that the SHO is a “better” car than a BMW 5-series?

For some reason people put the Big 3 on different standards than the rest. Its like the bar is set lower so if Ford FINALLY makes an acceptable car, you have people like bigs4610 saying it is incredible. BMW is over here doing calculus and the retard (Ford) can count to 100 and today (with the SHO) got to 101…

This thing is ugly. And Borat I think you mean 6-speed, not 5-speed. BMW doesn't offer 5-speeds any more.

I drove 335 with 5 speed manual and not a new single turbo engine by bi-turbo. The car is incredible, albeit expensive. The fact that Ford will generate more torque and horsepower will be consumed by slushbox and extra heft. And those are projected in the future numbers (as well as single turbo motor), in reality the only Ford that in theory competes with today's 335 is 'tang. With "regular" V8 it produces 315 hp, for more you have to go for package that cost as much as 335. GT500 probably outgun 335 on straight line, but will you want to compete in twisties on mountain roads? Also, I can drive 335 all day long, GT will kill your enthusiasm in 5-6 hours.

well i do believe the SHO has superior refinement and performance.

The foundation of the 2010 Taurus SHO is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine, which delivers 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm.

have you seen the taurus? incredible...

I don't believe SHO is near that level of refinement and performance. You drop this engine in 335 and observe it leaving any Ford in dust in twisties. Of course you can buy 2 Fords for price of one 335.
