2009 BMW 7-Series to get advanced night vision system

The Cadillac DTS has never been considered a technological tour de force, but it is starting to look like it was a little ahead of its time. The DTS was one of the first mainstream production vehicles to offer night vision, a technology that has now spread to a few premium brands. Not to be left out on the next-generation of this technology, BMW will launch a new night vision system in its updated 7-series.

According to a report by alle-autos-in.de, the new system will be able to detect human presence in front of the vehicle and then flash a warning symbol on the display. Moreover, the system will be able to tell if a pedestrian is in the road or safely on the sidewalk, although the publication fails to mention how the system can differentiate the two.

The new system will be so advanced that it will also be able to read speed limit signs and warn drivers when they are driving too fast. However, this feature will only be available in Europe for the time being.

The big BMW will also be keeping an eye on your speed during inclement weather. The camera can detect fog or rain, and will warn drivers when they are approaching an unsafe speed. Despite the warning, the system has no control over the speed of the vehicle so lead foots need not worry.

Thanks to BMWBlog.com, we also know some other details about the next-generation 7-series. The base-model car will be powered by the same twin-turbo V8 found in the X6, while the up-level model will use a twin-turbo V12. To differentiate the two models, the V8 car will sport two square tail pipes whereas the V12 car will use four square outlets. As previously reported, the 7-series will use a new eight-speed transmission.

Four-wheel steering will be included on the 7-series option list, with an all-wheel drive option slated to be offered in a few years.

As seen in previous spy shots, the new 7-series’ interior is not a radical departure from the current BMW design book. That said, the cabin does appear more refined and the iDrive looks far less offensive than before.

Exterior

With its huge twin-kidney grille and the wrap-around headlights, the car mimics design elements of the X5 and X6 — but keeps the exclusive character the 7-series is known for.

Though still disguised with a fake rear spoiler, it is clearly visible that the rear end — especially the trunk lid — will become much more elegant compared to the current car’s back.

The next-generation 7-series will also make do with a more conventional roofline, rather than the coupe-like roof seen on the Concept CS.

In addition to the exterior updates, BMW will be introducing new iDrive, Dynamic Performance Control and ConnectDrive systems.

BMW will unveil the next 7‑series on July 7, but the all-new sedan won’t make its first public appearance until the Paris Motor Show in September. Look for the new 7 to hit the market shortly after that as a 2009 model.

as much crap the current E65/E66 got when it came out (and adrian took a lot of **** and dealt with them well), so many other car companies followed the theme from it and did some pretty good designs. we’ll see how this 7 influences the rest in the future.

but then again, it’s interesting how that cs concept has a lot of american flavor in it… i wonder who’s influencing whom..?

The sooner BMW and the rest of these German slimeballs stop producing cheapass, unreliable junk, the better the world will become. Right now, the only carmaker that builds high quality, reliable, desirable luxury cars is Cadillac. And maybe even Buick if they break in to the 50 thousand dollar + club here in the next couple of years.

My point is we as Americans shouldn’t continue to fall for this flashy crap because it’s got a German nameplate. Especially when underneath it all, it’s got atrocious quality that will put you in the poor farm quickly. But we do. And unfortunately we Americans are still such slow learners. These folks need to experience a real car before falling into the pitfall that is this German trash. By American folks, it’s your duty and in the end you’ll be the winner.

From the side, it looks like a Volvo S80, but that could just be the camo stripes playing tricks on me. If they make the rear pretty conventional, then I think it’ll be a nice design. I’d like to see BMW get back to it’s pre-Banlged days. My E46 is still one of the better looking and most recognizable cars on the road…10 yrs after it’s intro. Can’t say that about a lot of other cars these days.

Gotta way in here, Cadillacs used to be pimp mobiles. I see more “thugs” in RR, Bentleys, 300C’s, Mercedes S-class, and yes BMW 7 series, get real. Anything perceived as “prestige” is going to have “thug” types, pimps, drug dealers, etc driving them. I bet MB and BMW are taking the resurgent GM products more seriously than you guys. If they’re smart? The Euro-clowns will never have it so easy again.

ratty_672, I like the flame surfacing too, it’s different. A shame that the automotive media bashes them continually over it though. Sometimes they fail to realize that liking the style of a car is purely a matter of opinion, regardless of whose it is.

I think Bangle lost it completely. I see a lot of influence from Audi (honker of grill) and Chrysler from 60’s (creases along the body of the car). From what I can see none of it ties nicely. Granted, we can’t see the form behind camo, but considering his screwup with Z4, especially after Z3, series 5, 6 & 7 I think he shold stay in his gay closet and didn’t venture out. Then again - he may be totally straight since he has no taste whatsoever.

Golf, same here, I thought it looked like an S80 for sure. Talk about reigning in the design, wow. It went from thinking totally outside the box, and in fact, inventing (as much as any car designer ever “invents” anything new) a style that others have copied, at least copied parts of, to this thing. But I’ll have to wait to see it, but it looks fairly standard to me so far. As an architect, I think this looks like a strip mall of a car compared to a cutting-edge European building-as-machine like the previous generation did. This one won’t make the headlines as much, and making the headlines, good or bad, is what it’s about.

Rodd (jjt): Wrong. The 7 series has been plagued with electrical design problems that it almost killed a woman who got trapped inside. It also has a myriad of weird problems. One of the higher ups in BMW actually admitted to me that the E Class is a better buy than the 7 series. The only thing I give credit for is for its sharp and nimble handling. The S Class also has minor but annoying problems but not to the degree of the 7 series.

They are boring crap mobiles without the slightest hint of automotive passion.
The only reason people buy them is to try and show off their income.
If you want a very cool large luxury sedan then bypass than teutonic junk and get a Maserati Qporte. If that is too steep for you then get a Jaguar XJ…the best deal in luxo cars today. I could even see getting a new Caddy before a BMW.
German cars have become trite.
