probably a 4 door option of the 2011 6 series as the article says...2011 six series is tight as hell btw.
probably would be called 650iL but it wont happen b/c bmw would be screwing up there distinct number system

Misread it, but the article did point out the V-12 as a possbility, which if it isn't over 400hp, would still be waste. ~300hp out of a V-12 maybe impressive for an affordable luxury car, but let's look at some other cars...... The Mercedes Gullwing which is 40 years older than 8-series, was a 6 cylinder car, had 215 hp, and had the first motor with direct injection, the "New" technology making the rounds today, how about that for a car that's 60 years old?

The Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 is ~20 years older with 280HP V8 motor.

315HP isn't all that impressive, many car models before the oil scare of the 1970's boasted HP near or above 300. The oil scare just reset the horse race. Look at Buick, they had V8 motors with over 400HP.

---------------------->Toy Yoda, you are an idiot. DID YOU READ THE ARTICLE?? it sayd "in the *1990s** the 850i had a 326hp V12. NOT two-thousand-seven. A 326hp V12 back in '91 when my old '91 Eagle Talon TSi came out, was pretty darn good.

V-12 with 326HP. That seems like a waste. I know the number of cylinders don't equate to horsepower and that V-12's are meant for their smoothness, but why add all that extra weight? Then there's the argument that V-12's are about prestige.... I don't understand that either. But, If they want smoothness, an inline-6 is smooth, and you can definitely crank out 326hp out of a 6.

Wasn't the original 850 V-12 meant to compete with the top end Porsche Turbo of its day? I remember reading that it was designed in response to that car and that is why they jammed so much BMW technology into it that later on made it such a special cult car.

These days, the Porsche Turbo competitor from BMW is the M3 V8, so the motivation on the part of the designers is different for this concept 8-series: to revive a classic model versus building a better car than any direct sportscar competition.

Since Porsche is building a new front-engined 928 as a sedan, perhaps this is what BMW is trying to compete with in a revived 8-series.

Before everyone starts salivating at the prospect of a beautiful Bimmer, we must remeber that BMW haven't turned out a single good-looking car in ages. Mr Bangle is to be held responsible, and he will undoubtedly design this 8-series, if it comes.

It will try to compete with the CLS, but wouldn't a big 850 be treading on M5 territory? Besides, I doubt Bangle can make a car that looks as good as the CLS. BMW will probably have the upper hand on performance though. However, in this section, I would buy the Maserati Quattroporte for its sheer elegance.

Maddawg - Mercedes copied BMW. The 3 series was the first entry level lux-sport sedan , followed by the C class.

SRT-4Ken is right. BMW is jumping into the market to compete with the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and the Mercedes CLS. Personally I think that BMW nee messing up their own numbering system. Even numbers are for Roadster/Coupes. Odd is for Sedans/Suv. A chopped roof does not make this a coupe to me. nless tof course they come out with a new Z8 as well....

Europerspective, you may question my thinking. I don’t mind. Niche vehicles are great. Often tho, niche cars create whole new segments (4dr coupes?). Some car companies can invest millions into a niche vehicle for any reason: brand image or even just for the sake of capitalizing on being the only one out there. The popularity of the 4Dr Ford Explorer and Suburban come to mind. Those practically created the SUV craze. We all know how big that got. The CLS is awesome. It’s popular. It might even be popular enough to start a craze. BMW cannot simply turn a blind eye to the CLS’s popularity. In this case BMW has the resources to build a competitor to the CLS. It has the engines, platforms and the can pilfer from existing cars. And as such there is a great business case for BMW. You said yourself “the competition”. They are competitors –arguably the best competitors in the business. You can’t compete if you don’t play, Euro.

im so sick of all these ppl whining that cars look the same. yes they do a saloon will look like any other saloon its been like that forever. if u put a mkII escort next to a b kadett they look the same except for the lights. so no wonder a 3 series has a same basic shape as a seven. now bmw isnt half bad at distingushing its models ive never looked at a 5 and thought it was a 7. or even confused an x3 and x5 which are similar in size. with audi though i can never tell whether its an a4 or an a6 or even if its new or previous gen. and the about the extra models be happy its more choice. they can aford it because they share components across vehicles. bmw offres there strait 3.0 six in all their cars for example. this is the kind of sharing thats alright. if ur like gm and slap on a different badge and lights and sell it at 4 differet dealers then its shit sharing.

maddawggy dawg look at the rear of the 3,5, and 7 and compare that to the rear of the C, E and S. the front end of most of the BMWs look pretty disticnt aside from the twin kidney grills which is a tradition and unique feature of BMWs for 25+ years.

But back to 4 door coupes, go sit in a CLS if you get the chance, and if you're like me 6"1 180lbs, i honestly think its the smallest car in the world but my gawd its good looking. Its kinda like how women wear those high heels, uncomfortable as hell, but the end result makes them look good and stand out.

And i just cant stand that, why spend 100k on a BMW when you can buy their cheapest model and its just a smaller version of the big car, they still look the same. Thats like going to a family reunion, except a 15 person family, and everyones a twin, some are smaller than others, others taller, one has a little different hair style, but their face and characters are all about the same.

Just frustrates me, COME ON, DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!

I think BMW makes some of the greatest driving machines on the earth... but heres my beef with them. Look back 25+ years ago, where was BMW? they had a few sports cars, what was mercedes benz doing? they were about as good as Royles Royce or better, they were a by-word for apsolute quality. When people thought of luxary and build quality they thought of a Benz, when someone thought of a race car you can buy people thought of BMW. BMW wasnt really into luxary at the time.

But today, yeah they have alot of models, but anymore look at them all, the front ends of them all look about the same, through out their life they never did alot with the way the car looks, next to porsche, BMW is some of the laziest car designers in the world. Thats why i always admired mercedes, they always built something beautiful, and on top of that they took chances by completly changing their cars every few years, instead all bmw ever did was ever 5 years, they slightly updated the front and rear end of the car, instead of overall looks completly changed, they did little improvements because their motto is "why change something that works".

Seriously look at all their models from dead on, they all each carry the same type of look...

look at all of mercedes benz's front ends to all their lines, each car has its own personality, a different face, a different look. A car for many occasions.

Why are so many fans of the old 850 - a two door GT, getting excited about this concept - a rebodied 5 or 7-series. Apart from the name, I don't see that the two have much in common.

Me,
Why do you feel that "they had to do something to compete with this awesome automobile". I don't really understand the thinking that says when your competition makes a niche model you must join them, what purpose does it serve?
.
Some of the most respected companies have found success by striving to be innovative and not following market trends, Porsche is one (cash cow Cayenne excepted), Apple would be another.
.
Its not the only way to go, but the example is strong enough to allow us to question your thinking I hope.

Go BMW. I'd like a new 8-series V12 a lot more than the 6-series.

A V12 model is a must. I really hope they aren't "mulling" the idea. You don't produce an 8-Series range with no V12 model.
