BMW has announced a new leading man for its design department. Karim Habib, currently head of BMW exterior design, will take over as Head of BMW Design on June 1.

Habib, 42, joined BMW's design team in 1998 and worked his way through the automaker's interior and exterior design divisions. Habib ascended through the ranks to become Team Leader Advanced Design for the BMW Group before taking his current position as head of the BMW Exterior Design department.

Habib has several credits to his name but is best known for his design of the current 7-Series.

"Karim Habib is an outstanding designer who has had a significant impact on the design of the BMW brand over many years. His longstanding experience and subtle instinct for timely elegance and dynamics are the ideal prerequisites for this demanding task," said Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

No word on what Habib's first project will be as Head of BMW Design, but the aging X5 SUV seems like a likely candidate.
