BMW says that the greenest and most efficient 3-Series ever, the 316d, will go on sale later this year across Europe. Slotting below the 318d as the automaker’s entry-level model, the 316d will average 62.8 mpg in the European combined cycle (or about 52 mpg using United States customary measurement).
Its 1,995cc (2.0-liter) four-cylinder diesel engine puts out 116 horsepower and 192 lb-ft. of torque but only emits 118 g/km of CO2. BMW says it will run to 62 mph in 10.9 seconds and tops out at 125 mph. It will come standard with a six-speed manual transmission.
The BMW 316d will cost just £35 annually in taxes in the United Kingdom thanks to its C Vehicle Excise Duty rating.
In the U.K., the 316d sedan will go on sale for £23,330 in September. It includes air conditioning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls and fog lamps as standard.

Why doesn’t BMW offer the 318d here again? The 335d is total overkill… the mission of diesel in a car isn’t supposed to be mind-boggling torque, it’s supposed to be fuel economy.

I think the diesel invasion may be coming RaineMan. Like the article said the other day the “clean” diesels are starting to gain momentum. I have no doubt the likes of BMW are aware of this.

We in the U.S. are embarrasingly behind in diesel cars. They get better gas mileage than most hybrids and run clean. Granted, diesel prices are not great right now, but I’d rather drive this 316d than some hybrid that lacks any styling panache and just looks like a lozenge on wheels. Plus, this 316d looks FAR better than the 318, which was about 3/4s of a real BMW in appearance (like someone dropped a guillotine blade on the back quarter and lopped it off).

The trend clearly is going in the direction of “premium” small efficient cars. I think the Jetta TDI already presents a viable option to Hybrids. I don’t think BMW can bring this into the US at a competive price.

Why not a $30K 1-series diesel for the states? It will be a great alternative to Prius or whatever Lexus is bringing out on their hybrid.

@RaineMan,
I agree. The 330d with single turbo and available/optional DKG would have been the best choice. As it stands the 335d is simply too expensive.

In your own areas have you seen Diesel prices below Gasoline?
The have been $0.10 lower here
This is a very good thing I hope this and VW will turn the tide on Diesel here.

2 L engine…. not bad!
I think this is a great idea. People who are not fussed with top speed but want ’style’ can still get it.

In my town we have Tahoe police cars. This car is economical and logical for the states. BMW will still charge out the ass for it anyways.

BMW have been building diesels here in europe for several years now – 20 or more I think. And this is just in the thread of their development. Smaller and smaller engines with more and more efficiency. Diesel power is the greatest – Just take the Lemans race over here – Top class is mainly powered by diesel. I think that diesel is the way forward.
You get much better acceleration even in the very smal diesels from eg. peugout, citroen and fiat. Way better milage and also better durability on the engines since they are not run as hard as petrol engines.
I only have to say to all americans – Look forward to this and embrace the horse pee!
Personally I’d get the audi A6 3.0 turbo diesel – Greatest car ever made!

Efficiency is one thing, but what the article is conveniently left out is the vehicle broke down after 30 miles (it is a BMW afterall) and spent the rest of the run on the back of a flatbed.
Nice try at building something to compete with the hot new Volt, but German quality and reliability has always been a letdown and never ever comes close to matching the quality and reliability of a General Motors vehicle. Never.

Nobody is fooled by this. Everyone knows that driving a BMW means you are a self-center, arrogant, spineless dikk so just because it gets a few more mpg’s doesn’t matter. Save the false image and spend the money on a real car. The new Buick Lacrosse is the BMW fo the new millenium. It’ll be the hip new trendy car to own when you want to say “I’ve arrived”. All GM has to do is put one of their world class diesels in it and BMW’s glory days will be over.
It’s a fact Americans would rather drive a GM vehicle. Together, we will once again show the world how Automotive excellence is achieved. Imports don’t stand a chance.
Buy American. buy GM. It is your patriotic duty

yes, millions are going to flock to the one GM dealership left in their state to drop $40k+ on a chevy cavalier i mean volt fitted with untested/unknown real world reliability li ion batteries.
good luck with that. I hope you’ve invested your 401k heavily in GM stock. roflmaohaha.

Do you drive a beamer, because you sure are sounding like a self centered, arrogant, spineless dik.
And anyone who thinks a Buick is “hip and trendy” needs to go to rehab quick. Also, how do you Know whether or not americans was to drive american cars? As far as i can tell, americans unfortunately want to drive japanese cars from the numbers. As for the “world class diesels” you’re talking about, the only thing that i can deduce is that you want GM to drop the Silverado engine into the Aveo.
