BMW announces two recalls covering four models

07/16/2009, 9:45 AM

By Drew Johnson

BMW has announced two separate recalls involving 2008 model year 1-Series and 3-Series models and 2009 model year X5 and X6 models. The 1- and 3-Series models are being recalled for a possible air bag problem while the X5 and X6 SUVs are being recalled for possible braking issues.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some 2008 model year 1-Series and 3-Series models could have incorrect air bag wiring. Some models may have been equipped with the incorrect crimp connector, resulting in an insufficient connection.

As a result, side air bags and seatbelt tensioners may not function properly in the event of a crash, possibly leading to the increased risk of injury.

Separately, BMW is recalling 2009 X5 and X6 models for a potential brake disc problem. Some models may have been equipped with rear brake discs that are not up to spec, potentially leading to brake failure and the increased risk of crash.

Yes, X5 and X6 owners should be recalled, and sent to the junk yard for crushing.

I’m just glad to see that recalls happen with all automakers. If this was a post about a chevy, ford, or chrysler–there would be 100+ negative posts about the poor quality of american cars. Glad to see most people can just overlook a major recall on a BMW and not react.

I know BMW owners are glad this is under a recall and not being charged for the repairs. a typical brake job for BMW’s are around $2,000 dollars.
