BMW confirms new model based on CS concept [photos from NYIAS]

[Live photos from NYAS]BMW announced today at the Tokyo Motor Show that it will produce a car based on the CS concept. Earlier this year, BMW’s North American CEO, Tom Purves, told Automotive News that a production version of the CS was likely, despite a report by Germany’s Auto Bild indicating the car would probably not see production.

“Our dealers, having seen the photos, are very excited,” Purves said. “They love it. [...] If media and dealers like it, there’s a good chance the customers will.”

The CS is “not a stretch or modified anything,” he said, suggesting the car is both realistic and should appeal to mainstream upper luxury buyers. Purves says there have been very few cases of BMW not following a concept car with a production model.

The road-going version of the CS will likely be badged as an 8-Series, according to various reports. Look for BMW to debut the car at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

This isn’t supposed to go up against the CLS. This is supposed to go up against any car which is above the S-class. In that case its up against the bentley GT, aston martin DB9 or ferrari 612. I know it would rather take a CL over this let alone anything else.

This CS concept thing will indeed make it into production and be on sale a few years from now. It will be more or less in direct competition with the Rapide and Panamera, and not really anywhere near the CLS (of which there will be a new model of by that time). It will likely be called the 8-Series, it will have four doors, and it will be more expensive and higher in the hierarchy than the 7 (of which there will also be a new model of quite soon). You know how there’s still no M7?There probably never will be. BMW has stated in the past that it has no real intention of diluting the extremely sporty image of its M line, which is what is believed will happen if that sexy badge ever makes it on to the 7-Series. BMW has also previously stated that one of the very core principles of the ///M Division is to AVOID making sports cars that are stupidly heavy with stupidly large amounts of power, quite unlike M-B’s ay-em-gee. Though the new sedan and the soon-new 7’s weights probably won’t be too far from one another, it is safe to say they’ll be very different vehicles. Perhaps a flat base 8 would cost less than a fully-loaded 7, but the 8 will most certainly be higher in the model spectrum. The classic 7-Series will still remain a BMW flagship, with the image of the big grand sports sedan luxury yacht. But the 8? It will be by definition a sports car, and look and feel like it too–but of course with almost all if not all the 7’s very nice niceties. The CL63 crowd will just love it. And then, later, the M8. Probably. Not for like half a decade at least. A helpful juxtapositional comparison here is looking at the current Audi A4 in relation to the new A5 and S5, ignoring the [current] RS4 variant, and with the A4 taking the place of the Seven. Think about how the A4 (or even the A6) sits in in the lineup in relation to the A5. See?

So yeah, in summary, the CS concept will indeed make it to the dealerships in some form at some point, and no CLS will be able to touch it. It will NOT be a CLS “figher”, despite having four doors and looking like a coupe. In fact, it is my opinion that a potential buyer looking at this Panamera-led niche will have one ass Mercedes doesn’t have a seat for. I doubt Mercedes will have a competitor for at least a whole model generation. Here’s some more of my opinion: the CS concept is freakin’ fugly, but the production version definitely won’t be.

btwfyi, if you disagree with me on any of this, you are wrong. Other than, of course, when I say “my opinion” or “likely”.

col3372– All that you said has been taken straight out of your ass seeing as you have NO idea what BMW has in stock for this CS concept. Not you, not the press, probably not even BMW themselves. Everything that has been said about this concept is pure speculation. Will they build it? No one knows. BMW has been known to pull the plug on several concepts that were said to be slated for production. Google it. “If you disagree with me on this, you are wrong” ?? Please kid… I love it how all of a sudden everyone is an insider.

FACT- Nobody knows for sure what BMW has for this concept. ALL it is was a marketing test to see how dealers and the press would respond and probably a study for a different design direction. PERIOD. There’s no 8-series or M10 or M8 or anything of that sorts, nothing is official, it’s all a theoretical study. That being said, yes, most likely BMW is gearing up for a CLS/Panamera/Rapide counterpart. And BMW will definitely stay away from breaking the 150k price tag. Their price strategy is the opposite (cheaper BMWs) — i.e. 1-series, F3 crossover.

Your comment was certainly entertaining though.

It’s most probably like with the Panamera, eventhough BMW isn’t Porsche. First there were rumors, first renderings in the press, a concept car and finally they comitted that they will produce it by 2009. If that is true we’ll have to wait for at least a year until BMW will respond to the question whether they’ll produce it or not.

Who in their right mind would take this over a Porsche Panamera let alone the beautiful looking Aston Rapide?

Best BMW could hope for is this car to replace the 6-Series and go directly up against the CLS.

BY THE WAY, Mercedes will probably have a competiter for this car in the mould of the forthcoming MAYBACH 4 door Coupe and if it looks anything like the exelero then the Bmer won’t even have a fighing chance.

The CLS is positioned against the 6-series. This is a level up from the 7 series so will have be be around $120k which is against the porsche panamera, Rapide and GT and the mercedes CL. I has no chance of competing against them. Don’t forget the ferrari 599 is also in this class aswell a forthcoming Maybach 4 door coupe.

Bye Bye Panamera, you ugly son of Beetle. Rumors has it BMW has filed trademarks on “M10″ and this would be the new model, exclusively offered in M-trim as a top of the range Bimmer. Also photos were circulating of an M5 with what appeared to be an intercooler, suggesting the M10 might speculatively have the M5/M6 engine twin-turboed. *God, are you there?*
