Taking a shot at the four-door coupe segment, BMW has unveiled the Concept Gran Coupe at the Auto China car show in Beijing. The new Bimmer appears to be a four-door version of the next-generation 6-Series, which has been spied in two-door form in recent months.
For years, German media reports have suggested the new 6-Series will be offered in two- and four-door varieties. While it’s not known if the Concept Gran Coupe is intended for production, the vehicle is a clear answer to the Mercedes-Benz CLS.
The Concept Gran Coupe follows the design first laid out by the German automaker’s Concept CS. BMW didn’t give away too much in the way of details on the Concept Gran Coupe, but the sleek four-door looks more like a pre-production prototype than pure concept. BMW also has a strong track record of moving concepts into production, so we expect to see a version of the four-door 6er on the road in the not too distant future.
Stylistically, the Concept Gran Coupe doesn’t stray too far from BMW’s new 5- and 7-Series vehicles. However, the Gran Coupe’s overall shape is much sleeker, featuring a roofline that is nearly four inches lower than BMW’s other big sedans. No word on what engine lies beneath the Gran Coupe’s hood, but we suspect any powertrain from the 5-Series sedan would fit between the four-door coupe’s front fenders.
BMW is keeping quite on any production plans for the Gran Coupe, but an announcement could be made as early as this fall’s Paris Motor Show.
